On this day, we reflect on the life and sacrifice of St. Charles Parish Sheriff Lewis Ory who was murdered in the line of duty 113 years ago today. Lewis Ory's 23-year tenure as sheriff of St. Charles Parish tragically ended on Jan. 26, 1903. Sheriff Ory, 56, was attempting to arrest a fugitive from neighboring Jefferson Parish when he was shot in the temple. He died instantly. According to a local newspaper account, a sheriff's posse hunted down the murderer. The suspect's body was found riddled with bullets. Lewis Ory was the first lawman, and only St. Charles Parish Sheriff, to be killed in the line of duty. His memory is honored at the St. Charles Parish Fallen Heroes Memorial in Luling, LA and on panel 42E-20 of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM SHERIFF GREG CHAMPAGNE REGARDING THE RESURFACING OF THE HALE BOGGS BRIDGE With the population of St. Charles Parish balanced on both sides of the Mississippi River, the Hale Boggs Bridge transformed our Parish into a united community. With its imposing 400’ towers and cable-stay design, the bridge has become the symbol of St. Charles Parish. Completed in 1983, several thousand motorist travel across this bridge every day. As part of America’s Interstate system, the bridge is a vital corridor for all of South Louisiana and one of the busiest seaports in the world. For the next six months, the Louisiana DOTD will begin resurfacing the deck of the bridge. This overlay project will completely close one side of the bridge at a time. This will drastically change the flow of traffic. St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne, Parish President Larry Cochran, St. Charles Hospital and EMS, Public Schools, Fire Departments, District Attorney, Judges and State Legislators are all working together to minimize safety concerns and any potential disruption in essential services in St. Charles Parish for the duration of this project. Motorist must take note of the following route changes. Starting February 1st, traffic will be reduced to one lane on the southbound span, (that's traveling east bank to west bank). During this times, work crews will begin setting-up concrete barriers and re-striping. On February 15th, all northbound traffic will merge onto two lanes on the southbound span of the bridge, resulting in a total closure northbound span. There will be two lanes going north towards Interstate 10 (from West bank towards the East Bank) and one lane south towards US Hwy 90. (From east bank to west bank). Resurfacing will begin with an anticipated completion in early April, depending on weather conditions. Accessing the bridge from February 15th until early to mid April will require the following routes: On the west bank, motorist traveling to the east bank will need to access I-310 from either US Hwy 90 or LA 3127. The on ramp from LA 18 (River Road) heading North onto the bridge will be CLOSED. On the east bank, motorist traveling to the west bank will need to access I-310 from either LA 48, (River Road), US Hwy 61, (Airline Highway) or Interstate10. The northbound Exit ramp to LA 48 (River Road) will be CLOSED. Once the northbound resurfacing is completed, all traffic will be diverted onto the newly resurfaced northbound span. Again, there will be two lanes going north towards Interstate10 (from west bank towards the east bank) and one lane south towards US Hwy 90. (From east bank to west bank). On the west bank, motorist traveling to the east bank will still need to access I-310 from either US Hwy 90 or LA 3127. The Southbound exit ramp to LA 18, (River Road) will be CLOSED. On the east bank, motorist traveling to the west bank will need to access I-310 from Interstate 10 or US Hwy 61, (Airline Highway). The on-ramp from LA 48, (River Road) heading to the West bank will be CLOSED. These closures will create potential delays during peak travel times. On the east bank expect delays during peak hours on Airline Hwy, River Road, Ormond Blvd, Almedia Road and St. Rose Avenue. On the west bank expect delays during peak hours on River Road, LA 3127, US Hwy 90, Paul Malliard Road and Old Spanish Trail. The Louisiana DOTD estimates this work to be completed around mid-June, depending on weather conditions. Once completed all normal traffic will resume. To help alleviate traffic congestion.... Adjust the time of your river crossings to avoid peak times. The Louisiana DOTD anticipates that the greatest traffic demands will occur between 6:30am till 9:00am and 3:30pm till 6:30pm, Mondays – Fridays. If you have flexible travel, adjust travel to a non-peak time. You can also seek alternate routes in crossing the river. The following Mississippi River Bridges are available as an alternate route: The Huey P. Long Bridge in Jefferson Parish is a 31 miles drive down river The Crescent City Connection in New Orleans is a 35 miles drive down river The Veterans Memorial Bridge in St. James Parish is a 41 miles drive up river The Sunshine Bridge in St. James Parish is a 54 miles drive up river As always, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office will do its utmost to minimized traffic congestion and keep residents informed of new developments as they occur. https://vimeo.com/153047446
