The Kentucky Humane Society Equine C.A.R.E. (Connect, Assist, Rescue, Educate) Program is dedicated to helping the companion or recreational horse. The Kentucky Humane Society's Equine C.A.R.E. (Connect, Assist, Rescue, Educate) Program is dedicated to helping the companion or recreational horse. Our proactive services include moving horses from crisis into safe homes or rescue agencies, providing online re-homing services to horse owners who can no longer keep them, matching available horses with adopters, implementing gelding and wellness clinics, and making educational tools and resources available to our equine community.
The Kentucky Humane Society is a strong advocate for adoption, and we want to help find the right horse for you! While we do not have an equine facility, we have horses available to adopt from foster homes, and we network with partner agencies to match horses with adopters.
The KHS Foster Barn Network is a critical component to our horse program because we do not have a physical ranch or sanctuary. Our network of volunteers and participating rescues help with horses who come to us and need time, medical treatment or training before being placed for adoption. The horses are kept in foster homes and are cared for by KHS volunteers. Some horses need the care and expertise that comes with rehabilitating an emaciated, neglected or injured horse. Many simply need good nutrition, handling, riding and tender loving care.
Experienced horse handlers can help by providing a temporary home for these horses. Our horses are often adopted directly from the foster barn, but are sometimes transferred to a rescue agency for adoption. If you have a barn, some extra time and love in your heart for these amazing creatures – give it a try! You'll find it to be a rewarding experience, and you will have the assurance that you are helping KHS save more lives.
Volunteering for our Equine Programs can be very rewarding. There are many opportunities ranging from hands-on work with horses, to assisting with fundraising or spreading the word about our critical work. For more information please contact us horses@kyhumane.org.
