After a week of 50 degree weather, all the snow is finally melted and I can check on what is waking up in the garden. I have a weakness for hardy prairie natives - and this black eyed Susan, Rudbeckia triloba "prairie glow", was outstanding for late summer blooms. I love that the petals look like an artist painted them in a hurry - each one is unique. Looks like they were protected under the snow and already growing at the base. I can't wait to pair them with sunflowers and dahlias this year! 🌻💕✨

Early morning reading of #Floret Farm's new Cut Flower Garden book with my sweet william seedlings. I am giving them the highlights about their life in the garden, which involves occasional snow and fish emulsion showers. The book is a great resource and full of beautiful photography. I don't think I will tell the seedlings about all the cutting that is going to happen...I'm not the only one who talks to my plants, am I?

Still recovering from lots of talking/standing and meeting some great people at the Fremont County Bridal & Event Planning Expo. It was great to see the interest in locally-grown, seasonal flowers. I will admit that I spent a lot of time explaining that I won't have dahlias in June, or tulips in August. It wasn't easy, seeing potential customers walk away. But there are brides who are fascinated by the idea of local flowers, diversity, and organic growing. I can't wait to give them buckets and bouquets that can never be repeated, a unique snapshot of the beauty grown the week of their wedding. You just can't make a recipe for that.

Seriously pink ranunculus. I am soaking my corms today, to start spouting for early spring planting. They don't survive our winters, so I either dig them up or buy new each year. Sometimes I wonder if I should even grow perennials that can't take our winters, go through all the work to build a hoop house, over wintering all kinds of bulbs and plants in our already crowded garage. But then I look at a photo like this and just sigh. I will always do it.

Adding some sparkle to my Sunday with rose gold accents for my booth at the Fremont County Bridal Expo next week. Today I am working on my weekly seed sowing and planting plan for the next six months. Number of stems, colors, shape, texture, - all perfectly timed for the events and bouquets needed each week. You know, because Mother Nature is predictable - right?

I plucked these little chicks from their icy hen yesterday to start multiplying in the greenhouse. They are now under 12" of heavy spring snow. This particular plant has been with me through multiple moves-and now is all over our yard here. I love how plant-people take little snips and share with friends or sometimes in secret. Come on plant folks, have you ever sneaked a cutting from a botanical garden or yard? 😘

Here's to a sunny weekend with highs in the 50s and melting snow. When the yard is covered in snow all winter, it looks all neat and tidy. Now I see all the unfinished projects and layers of frozen dog poop 💩. So I will post this photo of calendula as a reminder that it will all be beautiful again. Calendula did not earn a spot in the cut flower garden, but I will always grow it in the herb garden to use in salads and sugar scrubs. Happy Friday! Who else loves calendula?
