Hamilton Greenbelt trail network is a fabulous place for family outings, walks and jogs, a bike ride, or walking the dog.
It is free to the public. Thanks to a generous donation from Jack and Myrtle Hamilton, the Hamilton Greenbelt opened in April 1990.  Several improvements and additions over the years have resulted in a first class trail network.  Thanks to the donation of additional land and funds from Coleman and Mary Smith, an easement from the Lakeway Municipal Utilities District and countless hours of volunteer services from Friends of the Parks, the Hamilton Greenbelt trail network, including Smith Greenbelt and Hurst Creek Preserve, now offers several miles of both developed and primitive trails that wander along Hurst and Yaupon Creeks. These areas are fabulous places for family outings, walks and jogs or a bike ride.
They are free to the public.

The Hamilton Greenbelt parking lot will temporarily be closed from June 5-9 for additional work on the landscaping. The City of Lakeway is adding chocolate loam that will serve as the base for native plants and grasses. “Because we are using heavy machinery for grading work, we will need to close the parking lot to ensure public safety,” Lakeway Parks and Recreation Director Andra Bennett said. “We apologize for any inconvenience this work may cause. However, the greenbelt trails will continue to be open to the public.” Temporary parking is available at the Lakeway Justice Center. The public may access the trails via the Smith Greenbelt trail that travels under Lohmans Crossing Road. For information, call 512-314-7530.

Lakeway Parks and Recreation Department is adding native grasses, plants, and trees to the Hamilton Greenbelt parking lot with a landscaping project set to begin May 22. Landscape company Abescape estimates the project will take approximately three weeks to complete, weather permitting. During this time, the Abescape crew will likely use the greenbelt’s upper parking lot for staging materials and equipment. Visitors should use caution during construction. “The varied colors and textures will greet Hamilton Greenbelt visitors with a warm welcome,” Parks and Recreation Director Andra Bennett said. This project was made possible through a generous donation from Lakeway Civic Corporation.

The Lakeway Firewise Committee and Lake Travis Fire Rescue will focus their efforts on clearing brush from Hurst Creek Greenbelt during a Wildfire Preparedness Volunteer Workday from 8:30 a.m.-noon May 6. The goal of the workday is to reduce the wildfire risk to Lakeway as part of the National Wildfire Preparedness Day. The Lakeway Firewise Committee, Lake Travis Fire Rescue, Lakeway Parks Department and community volunteers of all ages are taking a team approach to reducing wildfire danger by making the woodlands safer and creating healthier landscapes. Volunteers will meet at 226 Sailmaster in Lakeway for check-in and instructions and then join the Lake Travis Fire Rescue crew as they gather vegetation and chip it into beneficial mulch using the new fire department remote controlled, mobile chipping machine. As Lake Travis Fire Rescue Chief Robert Abbott said, “It’s hard, dirty work but the reward is a safer community and a growing awareness by our citizens of what a teamwork approach can accomplish in reducing our wildfire risk.” Central Texas is no stranger to storms – hail, thunder, rain, wind, and yes, even ice storms – but area communities also are threatened by another type of storm. Ember storms can be created by seasonal wildfire events in the heavily wooded hills and canyons of western Travis County. These same natural settings and wooded landscapes that attract residents can also create a significant danger to homes and citizens in the time of wildfire. The City of Lakeway will temporarily close the parking lot at the Hamilton Greenbelt I entryway while it constructs a new parking lot and restroom for the greenbelt. The parking lot closure will begin at the close-of-business on March 4. The construction zone will be closed to the public during the entire phase of construction, which is expected to be complete by mid- to late summer of this year. Both Hamilton Greenbelt I and II will remain open to the public throughout the construction process. “While there is never a perfect time to redirect a trail entry, historically we have seen a smaller number of trail users during the warmer summer months while many of our residents are traveling or on summer vacations,” Lakeway Parks and Recreation Director Andra Dearing said. “We feel that these improvements will be a welcome addition to the Hamilton Greenbelt.” A temporary trail and signage will be installed off of the recreation path on Lohmans Crossing that redirects Hamilton Greenbelt I trail users to use the sidewalk entry that circles under Lohmans Crossing Bridge. This will safely guide trail users into the greenbelt just beyond the construction zone. Temporary parking for Hamilton Greenbelt I will be available at the parking lots of the Lakeway Justice Center, 104 Cross Creek, and the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. The Hamilton Greenbelt II parking lot will remain open the entire time. Please note that the Friends of the Park Annual Wilderness Run is April 16. Friends of the Park members are aware that the Hamilton Greenbelt I entryway will be closed for construction, and that parking will be redirected to the Justice Center and Activity Center parking lots. They have agreed to have volunteers stationed along the temporary entryway to direct participants to the event safely and avoid construction. For information, call Lakeway Parks and Recreation Department at 512-314-7530.
