What is the dog flu? And more importantly, who is at risk and who should be vaccinated?? Canine influenza, more commonly known as the dog flu, is a respiratory disease that is easily spread among dogs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Symptoms are similar to what humans have when infected with the flu, including coughing, runny nose and fever. However, some dogs can suffer from life-threatening pneumonia. There are two different viruses, including the latest H3N2 virus, which was first detected in dogs in the U.S. in 2015. There is currently an outbreak affecting parts of the United States (most recently affecting a large number dogs in Florida this spring), and there have been several reported cases in Minnesota over the past couple of weeks. We are carrying the bivalent vaccine, which protects against both the older and newer forms of Influenza. Dogs that receive the vaccine should be examined first to be sure that they are healthy. The vaccine is boostered 2-4 weeks after the first vaccine; dogs should be protected 2 weeks AFTER the second vaccine is administered. Dogs considered highest at risk are those that interact heavily with other dogs in close contact; so dogs at places such as kennels, groomers, day care facilities, dog shows, and shelters are at increased risk of infection. Please feel free to call (952-595-6500) and/or schedule an appointment to discuss whether or not this vaccine is appropriate for your dog.
