Happy Friday, Knoxville! A few housekeeping (Park-keeping?) notes on this Sunny Friday afternoon (in no particular order): - As we mentioned perviously, the Park will be co-presenting a vintage baseball game in partnership with the East Tennessee Historical Society on Saturday (8/17) at 5:00PM on our main lawn in the middle of the Park; the game is free & open to the Public (and very family friendly), so please stop by! For more info on this event, part of the city wide Annual East TN History Fair, please click on the attached link: http://www.easttnhistory.org/historyfair - Two items (a doggie tote bag & crutch) were found in the park over past couple of days (see attached pictures). We have them safely in our possession, so please feel free to send us a message if you wish to claim either one. - For our regular Hank Rappe playground users, we are happy to report that the malfunctioning adaptive swing has been replaced with a new model (see picture) and the squeaking on the "Wee-Saw"(which admittedly had become somewhat unpleasant) has also been remedied by the manufacturer. Thank you to all for your patience and understanding as we addressed these maintenance issues! Hope everyone has a terrific weekend - stay hydrated and come see us!
East Tennessee History Fair
Attention (Vintage) Baseball Fans!! We are so excited to share that, in partnership with the East Tennessee Historical Society, Lakeshore Park will be co-hosting a vintage baseball game this coming Saturday 8/17 at 5:00PM! The game will be played on our main lawn in the middle of the Park, across the road from Marble Hall and the neighboring Pavilion - we are expecting a robust turnout, so to our regular Park goers, please expect higher traffic volume and plan accordingly. In addition, there will be an open house at the last remaining Park campus building from the original East Tennessee Hospital for the Insane from 4:00-7:00PM (8/17). Now the headquarters for the City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation, the building dates to 1886 and is a true historical & architectural gem. These are merely two of the many events taking place this Saturday as part of the Annual East TN History Fair, which is a wonderful celebration of our region's unique history - for more info, please follow the attached link. http://www.easttnhistory.org/historyfair#In%20the%20ETHC And for those of you unfamiliar with what a baseball game, circa 1864, might entail, we're including a link to an "educational" video for your enjoyment (courtesy of Conan O'Brien)...Play Ball!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS39vMhag-A

Good morning, Knoxville! Some arboreal news for your Wednesday morning: 1. Many of you have undoubtedly noticed that a large tree near the intersection of Lyons View/Northshore/Westland was recently removed. As a Park with nearly 1,000 trees, we are always saddened to say goodbye to one of our own, but this nearly 250 year old (!) White Oak had long since passed and was becoming a potential risk to Park goers. We are always grateful to our partners at City of Knoxville - Government and especially to Knoxville's Urban Forester, Kasey Krouse, for all of their vigilance, care & support! 2. And For all of you tree enthusiasts out there, Knoxville is extremely fortunate to be the host City for the upcoming 2019 ISA Annual International Conference & Trade Show - and Lakeshore Park is going to be the site of this weekend's International Tree Climbing Competition! Should be a really exciting weekend at the Park and we hope to see even more of you than usual for this amazing event! Regular Park goers, please note that we will have crews beginning to set up for this event today and that this weekend will see increased traffic (pedestrian and vehicular) in the Park. View Richard Thomas's Obituary on knoxnews.com and share memories
The Lakeshore Park Conservancy extends its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Richard "Lee" Thomas, Superintendent/CEO of the Lakeshore Mental Health Institute for 22 years until its closure in 2012. A dedicated & accomplished mental health professional, Superintendent Thomas also played an integral role in Lakeshore's evolution from hospital to public park and we will always be indebted to his service and partnership: “On any given day, you see thousands of people who come to this campus to go walk this park,” he once said. “It’s amazing. I never thought it would happen, but it has been great for our community.” More information on his life and memorial service are contained in the attached link. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/knoxnews/obituary.aspx?n=richard-thomas-lee&pid=193428467
