"Previous to participating in the Montana Commuter Challenge 3 years ago, I hadn't ridden my bike for 30 years. It was only because of the Challenge that I even found a bike I could ride. The very first time I tried my commute I only got a mile before I had to walk. But I made it! And now I try to start commuting in early Spring and keep going until late November." - Janice Kalvig, Technical Processes Librarian. How's your commute going?

Missoula, Montana Transportation

The number of commuters driving alone has increased over the last few years, becoming a staggering 69% in Montana and 76% nationwide. Those few extra minutes of commute time by walking or riding your bike to work not only save on emissions, but provide extra moments for "you-time." #mtcommuterchallenge

Happy History Friday! This week we have a picture of Carrie Nation, the infamous Prohibitionist. Spurred on by "visions of a divinely-inspired mission", in 1900 she went on a violent rampage through many saloons throughout Kansas, smashing windows, mirrors, bars, and hundreds of bottles of liquor with a hatchet. Following this, she became a nationally-known agitator, and began traveling throughout the United States to further her Prohibitionist agenda. She arrived in Kalispell in the spring of 1910, and gave several well-attended speeches in front of the Heller Saloon on Main Street. Standing in a buggy, she railed against the evils of alcohol, saloon owners, and the police, who were always corrupt, in her opinion. After her lectures hatchets, books, and other souvenirs were offered for sale, the proceeds from which were used to offset the many fines she incurred.

"As a Flathead High School counselor I having been riding my bike to work, in all seasons for many years. When snow is present, I ride a fat tire bike. On roads free of frosty flakes and ice, I ride an old steel frame, no suspension mountain bike with road friendly tires, which is about 10 years older than the students with whom I work." - Michael Sherman FHS Counselor. How's your commute?

We love our Library Advisors! Just look the burley trailer Ann Brooks used this morning to bike the milk cartons to ImagineIF CFalls for storytime. She went the extra mile (literally) and even packed her ukulele in the trailer for "Let's Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy" book they read together.

Commuter shout out to Chris Cunningham, Materials Handler at ImagineIF Kalispell, who rides his bike quite frequently to work. When asked how his bike commute was this morning, Chris said, "It wasn't as rewarding as usual. My bike's rear tire went flat overnight and I ended up overdressed for the warm weather. Personally, I find it irksome to sweat during my commute - next time I need to leave my coat at home!" #mtcommuterchallenge
