Recycling Pays, Literally Cardboard Proceeds Equal $5,000 for Screven Fireworks Show Jesup, GA – We all know recycling is the “right” thing to do. But have you ever wondered if it pays off? The team putting together the Screven Fireworks Show for the past decade would certainly say it does. A check was recently cut by Wayne Memorial for $5,000 and donated to the city to help offset the show’s $15,000 price tag. Averaging 26 tons of recycled cardboard annually since 2008, the hospital sets aside the cardboard boxes shipped to it daily. Those 26 tons of crushed cardboard result in $5000 of proceeds. The year-round recycling effort is led by Joe Davis, Director of Maintenance and Security. "It's an honor and pleasure to put these funds back to good use for the Screven July 4th Celebration, “ says Emma Lou Thompson, Director of Human Resources and Physician Recruitment at Wayne Memorial. “This signature event draws crowds from all over Southeast Georgia and certainly means a lot to our community," she adds. Jerry “Shag” Wright, Wayne County’s District 2 Commissioner, said, “We appreciate what the hospital has given to us. This donation of $5,000 helps underwrite about 1/3 of the cost of the fireworks show.” Screven City Council Member Raquel Wright notes a bit of history. “A special thank you goes to Mrs. Gaynell Boyette for coming up with the idea of the July 4th celebration in Screven.” She adds, “I’m not a politician, I’m just someone who cares. I care about Screven and want to share what we have with others – events like The Willene Todd Memorial Rodeo and the July 4th Celebration.” ####

Home Runs that Help: 21 Home Runs Tally $1,050 for Local Shelter Jesup, GA – What does a homerun, hospital and local shelter have to do with one another? Maybe not much at first glance. But, if you live in Wayne or surrounding counties, it means a lot. This past baseball season, a local high school baseball team had a little extra incentive for each home run completed - $50 to a local non-profit shelter. After a whopping 21 home runs in the Wayne County High School Varsity Baseball Team’s season, that home run tally equaled $1,050. Yesterday, representatives from all parties convened to make the gift official. Janet Keith, Executive Assistant to the hospital CEO and CFO, said, “It is an honor and privilege to be a Fair Haven Board Member and to be employed by Wayne Memorial Hospital -- a place that not only serves the residents of Wayne County, but gives back to the community on so many different levels. At the beginning of the WCHS baseball season, Wayne Memorial committed to giving $50 for every home run produced by the Varsity baseball team in order to support Fair Haven in a creative and unique way. We, at the hospital, are thankful to have a facility in Wayne County as a safe place for victims of domestic violence as they seek help and change from a negative environment to a positive one for themselves and their children.” Julia Burch, Executive Director of Fair Haven, added, “Fair Haven Shelter is very grateful to Wayne Memorial Hospital for incorporating the baseball players in a vital message….be a part of the community in which you live and give back to others when you can. Wayne Memorial practices this motto every day and supporting our shelter families in such a community fashion is so greatly appreciated.” Celia Boykin, mother of Yellow Jacket baseball player Griffin Boykin, said, "As the mom of a member of the WCHS Varsity Baseball Team and as a Fair Haven Board Member, I'm so pleased to see this donation happen today. This gift is a wonderful example of the sports community, a local nonprofit agency and a major employer for our area coming together to do something positive. We appreciate Wayne Memorial and the baseball coaches and players for making this possible." Wayne County High School’s Baseball Coach Justin McDonald added, “It's always great when we can help give back to the community. I would like to thank Joe Ierardi and Wayne Memorial Hospital for the donation along with everyone that was involved with this project for allowing us to be a part of it. Lastly, hats off to our players for sending 21 balls out of the park to help generate funds for Fair Haven.” Fair Haven is a 12-bed facility that focuses on giving victims of domestic violence a safe place to heal while providing the resources to begin a new life. If you or someone you love is a victim of domestic violence, call Fair Haven at 912-588-9999. If you would like to give of your time, talents or resources, you may also contact Fair Haven at fairhavenjesup.org.
