Today the Harwich Fire Department along with the Harwich Police, Brewster Fire Department and Doane Beal and Ames all participated in a mock crash at the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. Students from the senior class watched while firefighters removed victims from the crash and police officers conducted field sobriety tests and then arrested one of the drivers. The docudrama was followed by a presentation by Chief Probation Officer James Butcher, who shared both his professional experience and story of personal loss. This event was coordinated by Lieutenant Leighanne Smith, Firefighter Justin White and Sargent Aram Goshgarian.

#TBT Before the days of cell phones, when there was 1 firefighter on duty, the Department used a large airhorn mounted on the roof of the Bank Street Station to notify firefighters of a fire. There was a gamewell system hooked to the airhorn with a cog that had the numbers shown on the card. The firefighter would put the right cog in for the district and send out the signal, write the address on a blackboard and then take a truck to the fire.

I-Team: How Investigators Pinpoint The Cause Of A Fire

In Massachusetts the Fire Chief, by law, is responsible for determining the cause and origin of all fire occurring in his jurisdiction. In Harwich this is done in cooperation with the Harwich Police and the Massachusetts State Police Troopers assigned to Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. This is an excellent story that looks into these investigations and how there are done.
