facebook.comOur pastry case may look a little sad tomorrow. We are hopefully entering the last day of bakery transition. There are inspections to clear and a license to receive. It should be done by tomorrow morning and we will start baking immediately. We really appreciate your understanding.

We are saying goodbye to our old baking space. We have been renting this kitchen to do all of groundhouse baking. But that season is over. By next week we should be baking out of the new groundhouse space. Which means we are getting even closer to getting that second location open. We're getting closer everybody!!! Hoping for the first or second week in June.

We say so long to Perka. Now, before you get too worked up, just be patient and read on. If you don’t currently use Perka when you come to Groundhouse, then read on just for kicks. Why Change? We have no choice. We received a call from Perka last month that they were acquired by First Data and yadayadayada…Perka will no longer be available as a stand-alone app. So, What Now? We researched everything from punch cards, to other apps to nothing at all. We knew that whatever we did, it should be more than “just as good” as Perka, it needed to be better. Plus, everything earned by you on Perka would need to transfer to the new program. We think we found something you’ll like. Belly (yeah, we’re not big on the name) is our new customer rewards program. It’s similar to Perka in that you’ll earn free drinks and it can be accessed through an app on your phone, or with a key chain card. We don’t think this system will have all the little annoying glitches that Perka did. When you arrive at Groundhouse, you’ll flash your little QR code in front of an IPad screen, and you’re done! It’s a much simpler system as far as that goes. One big difference is that Belly counts visits to Groundhouse, not drinks purchased. The good part about that is that anything you buy counts toward a free drink. The less-good thing for some of you is that if you buy 4 drinks in 1 visit, it still counts the same number of points as if you bought 1 drink. Keep in mind, you’re still earning free drinks with every visit to Groundhouse (unless you just come in to use the bathroom…I mean, let’s be fair here). Starting Monday, May 1: We will no longer award Perka punches. When you come in during the month of May, we’ll have you register on Belly (that takes about 30 seconds) and then we’ll have you check into your Perka account, where we will transfer equal credit to Belly for you. You won’t lose any free drinks or punches at all. Perka is only available to us through May 31st, so May will be our transition month. It might take you an extra minute at the register your first time through, but after that it should operate like the well-oiled machine it is. You guys are always so patient and supportive of Groundhouse and that is not lost on us. We appreciate your patience through this transition and by the way, you’ll use Belly at Groundhouse South including the drive-thru when we open later this month! – fingers crossed. See you soon, and remember to drink more coffee.

We're always on the lookout for ingredients that will make our products be as healthy as possible, and keep our suppliers as local as possible. Enter Small Barn Honey. We came across these guys at a food expo featuring locally grown products. Small Barn is a local honey, produced right here in Gardner, Kansas. Once we tasted their honey, it was an easy switch. The honey we serve at the counter, the honey we add to our baked goods, and the honey in our energy bites and Greek Yogurt Parfaits, is now all Small Barn Honey. Not only is honey a more natural sweetener, but consuming local honey is thought to help many people who suffer from pollen allergies (but we're not doctors). Thanks Small Barn!

Groundhouse is joining this diaper drive!! We have a bright pink box at the front of the coffeehouse where you can put diapers you would like to donate. This diaper drive will go into May. It's a pretty cool thing to be a part of.

OK, here's the latest. We are closing up walls this week! It's been an interesting trip so far, but progress is being made. Our builder, Ed Moore Construction has been awesome through all of our little bumps and we are determined to see this through. We don't have a completion date quite yet, but in the not-too-distant future, you'll have a drive through option, a great outside patio area, and an awesome living room where you can enjoy a little Groundhouse. We're excited! As always, stay tuned and drink more coffee!

We're excited to be hosting a book signing this Saturday of Stephanie Morrill's new release The Lost Girl of Astor Street. We've carried Stephanie's books since our doors opened, and her books have been great sellers. Even so, this latest book is very special and a bit of a departure from her previous work. It's a mystery set in 1920's Chicago. An awesome read to enjoy in your favorite coffee house (shameless plug); with the bonus of a signature from the author! It happens between 10 and Noon this Saturday, February 11th! Come out and support the arts (and us).
Barbara Sue Sweetwood
We're pretty excited that we have a couple of book signings coming up featuring local authors. Tomorrow, Saturday, January 21, Barbara Sweetwood will be in the store from 10AM-2PM signing copies of her latest book, "The Long Ride." Catch her at www.barbarasuesweetwood.weebly.com.

January 20, 2012 we opened our doors at 6 AM. Mike Landis and a guy named Joe from Ft Leavenworth were our first 2 customers. It's been quite a ride since then and we've made countless friends. You guys have been great! We'd like to offer a little something for our customers tomorrow just to say "thanks for the 5!" Stop in and order a pastry or a crepe, and we'll throw in the brewed coffee for free. I guess a parfait would qualify as well...even energy bites...Actually, if you think you can make your case to our barista for a free coffee, then have at it. We'll let them make the call. Our cups run over with appreciation for you guys. Oh and Mike Landis and Joe (if you're still around), come on in and get whatever drink you want, on the house. THANKS FOR THE 5!
