From his birth on South Alabama farmland through youth in Columbus, Georgia, and studies at the University of Georgia, the sharecropper's son James E. Southerland in this compelling memoir recounts a journey of teaching and learning that spanned six decades. Beginning with the naivety of a freshly minted Ph.D. candidate with no teaching experience and ending with the rich perspective of a top academic officer, Southerland grew into the face on history for thousands of Brenau University’s students. His classroom became his shared field where he provided fruits of his teaching to the students he served while sustaining his own spirit and intellect with life-long learning.

U.S. News and World Reports data says we stand out for our small average class size and 10-to-1 student-teacher ratio. We placed in Best Colleges for Veterans, Best Value Schools, Best Regional Universities South and Best Campus Ethnic Diversity. “When 80.4 percent of classes have fewer than 20 students, that’s very impressive,” said Brenau Provost Jim Eck, the university’s top academic officer. “That is a higher percentage, according to the U.S. News data than top national universities including Princeton, Harvard, University of Chicago, Yale, MIT, Stanford, Penn, Duke and Cal Tech, and it is greater than some of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation, including Davidson, Wellesley, Amherst, Bowdoin, Williams and Middlebury." #BrenauBound
