The Artist Spotlight Lorraine McFarland Art House Artist/Instructor When it comes to her art, Lorraine McFarland was a late bloomer. Raised in St. Louis, Lorraine took every art course offered by her high school. She went to University of Missouri- Columbia with a declared major in art. However, when she saw what the other students could do she gave it up, thinking she was not artistically talented. Lorraine eventually earned a degree in Wildlife Management and became a field biologist. It was during this time that she learned photography, which would later contribute to her return to painting and drawing. Her father, who was a gifted artist, passed away in 1993 and Lorraine inherited all of his art supplies. Tucked away in storage in the years after his death, they were calling to her, but for various reasons the time was just not right for her to nurture her artistic side until later in her life. Lorraine' father always told her she could learn everything she needed to know to be a good artist by reading and practice and watching master artists paint. So, Lorraine took his advice to heart and started reading a lot about art history and techniques. In 1997, she pulled out the supplies he left her and began drawing and experimenting. She took some drawing classes and a watercolor class; but it was when she took a pastel class at the local vo-tech that things really began to happen quickly. For more about Lorraine's accomplishments visit her website lorrainemcfarlandart.com Join Lorraine for her Pre-Plain Air Workshop, Painting Plein Air with Pastels on Saturday, May 23-24. Callaway Plein Air is quickly approaching. 23 of the 50 slots are already filled! Sign up soon so you don't miss out on this great event. Art House is pleased to announce the event Judge for 2017 is Josh Crow. Josh Crow is painter from central Missouri. He studied Illustration at Rhode Island School of Design and Painting at Indiana University. The majority of his current work is studio-based, often times large scale and spans a variety of subjects and environments. However, plein air painting was where things started for Josh. When learning how to use oils, painting from life was always a focus. Much like drawing from observation, there is an element that makes for a challenging but also rewarding experience. The aim would be to find out how you will translate what is in front of you in your own personal way into paint on canvas. Josh is currently based out of Belle, Missouri, where he is involved with a non-profit arts organization that provides spaces for artists to develop their work through a residency program. He exhibits his work at various events and sells to mostly private collectors. This June he will be a participant in the top ranked Old Town Art Fair in Chicago.
