It's a #TBT because this inequity SHOULD be history, but it's the present: Adults without a high school diploma are more than twice as likely to be living in poverty as high school graduates. There are CURRENTLY 1.2 million people in IL in this category. By 2018, 63% of all US jobs will require education beyond high school. LET THAT SINK IN. Fight for the future at the #Rally4AdEd TOMORROW!

We can't let this fade into the archives of funding struggles and partisan politics. We need to rally NOW! Some facts about adult ed: HOW MANY? -About 882,000, or 30%, of adults in Chicago have low basic literacy skills, and 1.2 million people in the entire state of IL WHO? -Low literacy and lack of adult education primarily impacts working class people of color: 44% of Latinx adults and 24% of Black adults have below basic literacy skills, compared to 7% of white adults IN $$$? -Public assistance costs for individuals with only a high school diploma or no diploma are 14% and 45% higher, respectively, than for individuals with some post-secondary education. #FundAdultEd #FundFamilyLearning #DemandAdultEd #ILBudgetNOW

Meet Ciang and her children on #InternationalLiteracyDay! Ciang took Adult Ed ESL classes. She learned to speak English despite her struggles as a Burmese refugee supporting a family of 5. Recently she got her citizenship and a job as an assistant in CPS kitchens. Joshua, the youngest, is 1 1/2 years old and suffers from various medical conditions, needing speech therapy and help with eating and his immune system. The Family Literacy program does home visits with Ciang and her children, and Joshua is much healthier for it!
