We have three The Mission Continues alumni helping out with the production of tonight's program. Aaron Pylinski (Army) served as the Museum & Library's first Mission Continues fellow in 2013 and now works full-time as our Production Coordinator. Both Brian McDevitt (Marine Corps) and Angel Melendez (Army) just finished their fellowships and are continuing on as interns. Providing internships is an essential part of our mission - not only do interns further the work of our mission, but also an opportunity to provide educational opportunities and valuable work experience. We are honored to partner with the Mission Continues in this effort.

The PMML's delegation to France visited the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery to pay its respects. The cemetery, located in Seringes-et-Nesles, France, is the second largest WWI American cemetery and was dedicated in 1937, three years before the Germans would invade France again. 6,012 American soldiers are buried here with 241 Missing in Action and they died fighting during the Second Battle of the Marne and the Oise-Aisne campaign. Poet Joyce Kilmer is buried here. He enlisted in the New York National Guard and was deployed to France with the 69th Infantry Regiment. He was killed by a sniper during the Second Battle of the Marne. He is remembered most for his short poem "Trees" (1913). "I think that I shall never see/A poem lovely as a tree . . ." The inscription on the monument reads "These endurded all and gave all, that honor and justice might prevail, and that the world might enjoy freedom and inherit peace". The Battle of Verdun during WWI was one of the most horrific and deadly battles in human record with upwards of 400,000 killed and 1,000,000 casualties. Fought 100 years ago from February 1916 to December 1916 between the German invaders and French defenders, French forces ultimately repelled the Germans. A mere 8 years after the Douaumont Ossuary was completed in 1932, located on the Battle of Verdun battlefield, the Germans invaded France again. The PMML's delegation to France left the Verdun Battlefield deeply affected by what they saw and learned. When visiting, World War One is very real and present all these years later.

The PMML's delegation to France visited the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, paying respects to the more than 14,000 American men buried there who gave their lives to defeat the invading Germans. Most, but not all, of the graves are for the fallen of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. The Meuse-Argonne Offensive was the final Allied offensive of WWI, September 26, 1918 to the Armistice of 11 November 1918 (47 days). Under the command of General Pershing, 1.2 million American soldiers from the American Expeditionary Forces, First and Second Army, were involved. 26,277 Americans lost their lives and 95,786 were wounded.
