Sharing a Media Release from our friends at Hernando County Government... Dispose of tires for free at Tire Amnesty Day (Brooksville, FL) The Hernando County Mosquito Control Department (MCD), in conjunction with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, will be hosting a Tire Amnesty Day on Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hernando County Fairgrounds located at 6436 Broad Street in Brooksville. During this event, Hernando County residents will have the opportunity to dispose of an unlimited number of tires, free of charge, to reduce container breeding mosquitoes and discourage illegal dumping and storage. “It is important to know that as little as a quarter inch of water can breed hundreds of mosquitos,” Mosquito Control Director Sandra Fisher-Grainger said. “Tires laying around your property are a haven for mosquito breeding and Tire Amnesty Day is a chance to clean up your property and dispose of tires for free.” During this one-day event, passenger and semi tires without the rims, preferably clean of debris and not holding water, will be accepted from residents with valid identification showing proof of residency. No commercial operators will be permitted. MCD staff will verify residency, assist with stacking the tires and provide the public with outreach materials related to protecting themselves from mosquito bites and keeping their properties clear of mosquito breeding habitats. Residents will be responsible for unloading and putting tires into containers. Global Tire Recycling will be providing containers for tire collection as well as transportation and disposal. One container will be dedicated for a property clean up being organized by the Brooksville Police Department. Funding for the event was approved with the 2018 budget; however, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has offered to reimburse the full cost of the collection and disposal of the tires. Outside of Tire Amnesty Day, Hernando County residents can dispose of up to eight tires annually, at no charge, when taken to the following locations: West Hernando Convenience Center 2525 Osowaw Boulevard (CR 595) Spring Hill, Florida Phone: (352) 754-4770 Open Tuesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Sunday, Monday, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day East Hernando Convenience Center 33070 Cortez Boulevard Ridge Manor, Florida Phone: (352) 540-6205 Open Tuesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Sunday, Monday, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day Northwest Solid Waste Facility (Main Landfill) 14450 Landfill Road Brooksville, FL 34614 Phone: (352) 754-4112 Open Monday – Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed Sunday, New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day Contact the Hernando County Mosquito Control Department at (352) 540-6552 or visit www.HernandoCounty.us/mosquito for more information.
