Legends
Description
Legends provides Appalachian State University students the best entertainment (music, comedy, theater, etc.) from local, regional and national artists. 20 years ago, in a remodeled Winn Dixie Supermarket, Legends became the answer to the question, "Where can students go to safely socialize and be entertained without driving mountain roads at night?" Legends is the only facility of its kind in North Carolina and research has not found another university in the Eastern U.S. duplicating its services. Its goals are to provide ASU students the best entertainment, be it musical, comedy, theater, etc. from both regional and national artists. Previous performers have included Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Outkast, Jimmy Fallon, Widespread Panic, Nickel Creek, Collective Soul, Carrot Top, the Wailers, Edwin McCain, and Hootie and the Blowfish. Nearly each weekend it houses a dance night featuring a DJ and the latest Hip-Hop party music.
All shows are selected by one of seven A.P.P.S. councils, each made up of volunteers committed to programming and producing entertainment for their follow students. On most 'show' occasions students of proper age may elect to bring beer or wine to Legends. Upon entering and providing valid identification, their beverage is deposited behind the soft drink counter in coolers where it is released to them, one at a time.
Besides being a showcase for public concerts and dances, Legends is also utilized each week for meetings of campus groups. Very few rooms are large enough to hold 300 to 400 students for a meeting. Legends can hold up to 1000! Many of the 200+ campus clubs and organizations have rented the facility for their fundraisers or parties, and each year Greek Week fills the room to capacity for its highlight, the annual "Lip Sync" contest.
Having one of Western North Carolina's largest dance floors has helped Legends earn a reputation as on to the top entertainment facilities in the area. Now other universities come to Boone to investigate the possibility of locating a similar facility on their campus.
Legends is staffed by students who have completed a certification course in alcohol awareness (TIPS® Training for Intervention ProcedureS). They are in charge of monitoring the safety of students and guests, as well as maintaining the building. Currently, over 25 students are employed as Event Staff, as well as four student Event Staff Managers.
