When they aren't behind the wheel of a BT bus...our drivers are doing some other incredible things. Caroline Omland: Chantilly, VA resident, VT Fashion Merchandising and Design student, Haiti helper, Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship member, 2017 VT Homecoming Queen candidate, BT driver AND MORE. We are so proud of Caroline, who ran for Virginia Tech's Homecoming Queen this year. She is a winner in our eyes! About her platform: This past spring, Caroline went to the nation of Haiti and worked with the organization, feedONE. This organization partners with communities to bring sustainable change and growth. They feed over 160,000 children each day and provided 19,179,753 meals in Haiti in 2016 alone. However, over 100,000 children are still on the waiting list. Her platform aimed to help these children and support the Haitian school with 151 students, Institution Mixte Souer Andre.
"Small system" doing big things over here. Last weekend, we went to Atlanta, Georgia to accept the 2017 Grand Prize Award we earned from the American Public Transportation Association Adwheel Awards. This is a national competition that recognizes the most effective marketing and communications programs in the transit industry, nationwide. We were chosen as one of 11 Grand Prize winners, out of 350 entries from across the United States. Our "Drive for BT" social media advertising campaign helped solve our driver shortage issue, increasing staffing by 22% and bringing in over 200 applications in just 5 months. Our very own, Fairen Horner, also represented BT in a panel discussion with other award-winners, speaking to the success of the campaign.
We're getting a lot of "where's my bus" calls and messages. Remember that we are on Reduced Service, so routes will be running less frequently and service ends earlier today and tomorrow. See below for details or comment with your questions:
We tried out autonomous vehicles so you riders don't have to...yet. What are your thoughts on autonomous vehicles in Blacksburg? Yay? Nay?
