It is our duty as citizens "to stand up for others, especially the weak, especially the vulnerable."--SOTU, 2016 Despite health care #reform and a greater emphasis on the need for advocates of those who cannot speak for themselves, there is still a great hole in the system, especially when it comes to the health care system and caring for ill family. Caregivers who are not licensed health advocates but are concerned family members are increasingly in need of help and guidance. That is where a #health care advocate would come in. In the Professional Program in Health Advocacy, you learn how to become a health #advocate who is well-informed and qualified to advise patients and their families about health care issues. Course topics include ethical and legal issues in health care, cultural diversity and #advocacy for different generations. Begin your professional health advocacy career today! Register for the online information session taking place on Feb. 11 @http://bit.ly/1ZusfId.

"It is something I have always felt instinctively: the need for someone to be able to help others in this way." As Ed Shockley nears retirement after almost 25 years as the principal of Legacy Wealth Management, a financial services firm, he reflects on what he wants to do next. Not content with easing into retirement by sitting, reading or watching TV, he has done some soul searching as to "what's next." This has led him to the Professional Program in the Study of Loss and Grief. Learn more about the program at http://bit.ly/1l3EIQo. Read more about Shockley at http://bit.ly/1OgpVfJ.

Certificate Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies
Employment of substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors is projected to grow 31 percent by 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And now with more than 6 million Americans covered under the Affordable Care Act—including services for behavioral health—the need for qualified, skilled alcohol and drug abuse counselors will only continue to grow. The Certificate Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies prepares you to meet this demand. In addition, when you complete our certificate, you qualify to receive professional certification from the California Consortium of Addictions Programs and Professionals (CCAPP). This means that courses you take can be applied toward your CADCA or CADC. UC Berkeley Extension is one of less than 25 schools whose programs have been approved. Learn more about the possibilities at a free online information session on Feb. 9. Register @http://bit.ly/1PTM6KW.

Young minds can't always handle the events occurring in the world today without help. According to Peter Gray, Ph.D., in "Psychology Today," "by at least some estimates, five to eight times as many high school and college students meet the criteria for diagnosis of major depression and/or anxiety disorder as was true half a century or more ago." Abnormal child psychologists specialize in sociopathy, psychopathology, personality and mood disorders, depression, and anxiety in children—which are becoming more common as they start to feel loss of control over their fate. A Berkeley section of Abnormal Psychology begins Jan. 21. This course is a requirement in the Post-Baccalaureate Program for Counseling and Psychology Professions. Enroll today @http://bit.ly/1ZMEWer.
