We have brought to Augusta University one of the most advanced simulators for training in minimally invasive colorectal surgery. Dr. Daniel Albo has helped developed this simulator and is one of eight available anywhere at this point. Augusta University is developing an educational curriculum around this simulator, not only to train our residents and students, but also, to measure and analyze the concept of the training curve for the MIS colorectal surgeon.

Dr. Daniel Albo is bringing to Augusta University a retraining program that aims to help convert open to minimally invasive colorectal surgeons. This curriculum, which has been given in multiple sites across the country and abroad, involves an educational lecture, video-assisted training, hands-on cadaver workshops, use of simulators, and preceptorships modules. This is part of an ambitious project that the University have that aims on transforming the way we train our minimally invasive surgeons by borrowing extensively from the way the aviation industry trains their pilots. We intend to make this training available to other Departments/Centers at Augusta University. We are also going to be bringing surgeons from other institutions from the US and abroad. The collective data from this project (for which Dr. Albo the PI) is being collected in a multi institutional registry that is going to give us the most robust information yet on the comparative effectiveness of this educational methodology on the development of transferable MIS skills.
