The cows are all wormed and vaccinated and ready for spring! Here at Alpen Rose Creamery, cow care and health comes first. Vaccinations are important for cattle to help prevent diseases from spreading. While we now have a closed herd (meaning we do not buy cattle. Any cows added to the herd are born and raised on site), diseases can still be spread through clothing, human contact, and even through the air. Vaccinating the cows gives them protection against the most common cattle diseases that cause the most problems in a herd. They each get an initial shot around 3-4 months old, and then a booster 3-4 weeks later. Then only one booster shot per year after that. As for worming, we like to use Eprinex. This takes care of most internal and external parasites. With the snow and ice this time of the year, the cows usually have to stay in the barn. A common pest as a result of this is lice. It is species and location specific, so only spreads cow to cow. It can make the cows very itchy and is mostly just an annoyance. So a dose of Eprinex along the spine (similar to flea treatment for a cat or dog) takes care of the creepy crawlies and the cows are much more comfortable. They get a dose every winter/spring, and again in the fall only if needed. Fecals are collected here and there and tested to check the internal parasite levels. But these tend to stay low as we rotationally graze as the weather and seasons allow. Not treated, internal parasites can cause malnutrition and weakness. They take the nutrients the cows need and prevent proper absorption in the gut. So we like to ensure the cows get the absolute best care possible so they stay healthy and happy!

Here's how it looks cut! 4-6 weeks of curing and it will be ready to test out. Made another batch today, cow's milk with homemade rendered lard. Lightly lemongrass scented and naturally colored.

One cow due this month. Peau's due date is the 29th. She's bred to the Normande bull Riley. I used this specific bull on her mainly to improve her udder (and she's a slow milker!). Always looking to improve the herd, these are the generational steps we take to make a better herd of cattle
