Ocotillo Performing Arts Center
Description
State-of-the-art live theatre venue, managed by the Artesia Arts Council, Artesia, NM. For tickets or more info vist our website www.artesiaartscouncil.com In April of 1975, ten founding patrons and fifty-four charter members formed The Artesia Arts Council. Two main events have been held annually since that time; Art in the Park, a regional arts and crafts show that is held on the third Saturday of October in downtown Artesia's Central Park and Missoula Children's Theatre Camp, which offers an acting experience where local children receive instruction from two professionally trained individuals from the University of Montana. Every year in June, 40-60 children audition and rehearse, then give two public performances of a fairy tale adaption.
The Artesia Community Theatre is a long-standing affiliate of the Arts Council, made up of local talent.
In 2001, the Artesia Arts Council purchased the old Ocotillo Cinema, located at the corners of Main Street and Roselawn Ave. in downtown Artesia. Built in the 1930's, the building had last served as the Townhouse Cafeteria. With overwhelming support from the community, the building was transformed and reopened in 2008, as the Ocotillo Performing Arts Center (OPAC). Now a state of the art venue for touring entertainers, OPAC also offers local performers a chance for time in the spotlight.
Since opening, the Ocotillo, operated by Arts Council volunteers and 3 staff members, has taken southeastern New Mexico by storm. The OPAC offers a full schedule of professional touring shows and local performers. Also offered are Theatre, Art, and Music classes and numerous Art workshops for all ages. The venue is used by a photo club, businesses, organizations, and as a meeting hall. The OPAC truly makes it's mark as a community multi-use facility. The Artesia Arts Council proudly carries on the vision of it's original founders by continuing to grow and serve the community.
