Something that we are often asked , how much can the Z series block take without wedging? Having not split a cylinder on one under test conditions previously its hard to say for certain what has gone wrong and why it has gone wrong as you never actually have any data. Having one hooked up to the RND dyno cell being data logged as number one cylinder splits makes for some interesting findings as well as quite a wet dyno cell. Being held under a constant 2.6 bar of boost on the GEN2 GTX3071 - 2500N constant load on the dyno making for some lengthy and more accurate data acquisition, The Z20LEH engine block we tested finally gave in. V Band manifold Nortech Performance Gtx3071 GEN2 Turbosmart Hypergate + screamer REC Nimonic + 1mm Exhaust valves only RND Ported Cylinder head RND Modified Woosner Piston- Balanced set FCP H Beam conrods Airtec Gobstopper Intercooler AEM Water injection Custom Cams Piper Single valve springs EDS Intake manifold ARP Head, Mains and flywheel bolts TTV Flywheel + Helix 6 Pad - balanced to crank Radium FST system Inline fuel filter kit RND 1000 CC injectors RND Cam Pulleys CR 8.4:1 with modified squish area clearance Run in on a millers break in oil, final oil Millers 10-50 Having built the engine only 60 miles prior to steam cleaning number 1 piston, having the engine shut down straight after, we know exactly how it was and have enough left of it, with data to get a good idea of there limit in open deck format. Stripped back down, cleaned and inspected,what we learn in this case is:- There is no signs of detonation on any of the cylinders, given the 7 degree intake temperature at 2.6 bar of pressure, prior to water injection, conservative timing. Running a BKR7E spark plug gapped at 0.7 MM without misfire issues we know that the in cylinder conditions are quite favourable. Coolant temperature does not rise above 90 degrees, We would feel pretty confident in saying that this engine was running about as nice as possible just lacking in cylinder strength. We are interested mainly at the torque figure generated as this will generally the peak strain on the engine, this is also consequently the area where the cylinder wall failed. Running only the +1MM Exhaust valves is beneficial in both turbo spool and overall power, having the ratio of exhaust valve changed on the right setup will lead to a much more broad power curve. We are interested to test further the flow capacity of the standard intake valve, mated with an oversized exhaust valve. The HP figure pictured is the highest figure it produced, testing in different styles averaged this to be around the 580HP region, more noticeably the torque being 520LBS + So now to build exactly the same thing changing only the block for the RND V2 Wedged item. We know every single component has been perfect and fit for purpose at a limiter of 7600RPM, the benefits of a 60 mile full engine inspection. So how much can they take, more than you think but not as much as this ! Busy few weeks in the rush upto Christmas , last few jobs of the year now more or less complete. Nearly time to wind down for a few days. Another F23 gearbox refurbished fully from quite a sorry state . After having the car that this gearbox belongs to on our dyno, its new found power made short work of the shoddy gearbox. It would appear that a full tube of silicone was used in the first assembly of this gearbox, not so great for allowing oil to flow to the right places. Every single oil hole on this gearbox was totally blocked, it was only a matter of time when trying to put down 400LBS, something bad was going to happen. The result, a syncro and gear have totally welded themselves together making it impossible to de- select a gear. To add fuel to the fire , the debris from the damage caused one of the faces on the Quaife ATB differential to pick up and destroy itself. Full strip back to bare essentials, re finishing the gear-shaft so the needle roller bearings have a nice surface to contact. New bearings and gears as required, new Quaife sun gear and matching diff housing puts this ATB back to being good.

Huge spec Corsa vxr in for full maffless mapping - being a purpose built track machine then controlling the power is key. Fully forged Piper fast road cams Nortech v band manifold AET hybrid 2871r 0.8 hot side 3 bar pressure sensor Full 3 inch exhaust 613 cc injectors 80mm AFM (now in the boot ) With a claimed 400hp it was interesting to find it only make 350hp on the rollers despite using around 2bar of boost. Very little ignition timing was being used making this Corsa blow some very hot EGTs The AFM was maxed out , the standard Map sensor was also maxed out too making this car lean out severely on boost. If the Ecu can not see the change in pressure or airflow through a rising voltage then there is no hope for it being able to control it ! After loading our base map with many of the standard fault codes left active, the car immediately threw a fault code for the knock sensor having a low reading. Upon inspection we found that the bolt holding the knock sensor in place, was too long. This means the knock sensor was left to rattle away without being able to detect a single thing . We can only presume that the error for this was written out of the previous map as we wrote over it and started a fresh version. We can also only presume that fault is also the same reason we have some fairly heavy detonation on the spark plugs . 6 hours later, maffless and with a working knock sensor making 420hp and 340lbs of torque. Limiter at 8000rpm we have the 613 çc injectors about as flat out as we like to see them. Brilliant spec car and more to come for sure after some fuel system upgrades 😎

Multi angle valve seat cut FCP Engineering UK H beam rods RND modified woosner pistons RND cam pulleys mated to piper cams Nortech v band manifold Garrett gen2 GTX 3071 @ 1.8 bar Turbosmart Hypergate Ttv billet flywheel and helix 6 paddle Arp head studs , mains studs and flywheel bolts Airtec gob stopper intercooler RND downpipe and screamer 9" AEM brute force air filter RND 1000 çc Bosch injectors Single ASNU in tank lift pump Full Racemode mapping with injector cut traction control, maffless and also running a 4 bar pressure sensor. Safe to say at 514 Hp and 434ft/lb it's going well , making peak power at the limiter of 7700 rpm and holding a broad torque curve nicely , time to get the radium surge tank system installed, turn on the meth then see what this build can really do 😬👍🏻

Back on the dyno after a full RND engine rebuild - every part of this engine has been cleaned, inspected and reworked as necessary. Oil change to fully synthetic millers oil before finally being opened up fully for the first tim in a controlled manner. Fully rebuilt balanced bottom end Woosner pistons FCP Engineering UK H beam rods Arp head studs Cylinder head fully rebuilt with the valves re ground, valve seats cut - piper single springs Much more confident this time at maintaining 6000RPM+ for long periods of time. Some subtle map changes were made to compliment the new engine and after a thorough testing we were happy to see it leave making strong power.

Corsa VXR clubsport with the b16ler engine, this is the last of the corsa D VXRs running the Motronic Ecu's so we were keen to have a look at the latest and last software revision for the Motronic platform. Developing the car with the customer, changing the intercooler and exhaust alongside some carful mapping this clubsport now produces 252 Hp and as much again in lb/ft of torque. Needless to say it's transformed the car totally and we have another happy customer 😎

Having found a cause of number 3 big end failure on this engine its clear to see that being careful pays off. An oil gallery blocked by excess RTV silicone and another random object (we still dont even know what this is ) was also found inside the main oil drilling of the block. Further more the oil contamination problem caused by a faulty oil filter meant that we had debris spread to everywhere that had oil ! Every single part of the whole oiled engine assembly has been inspected / replaced / cleaned ( Mostly replaced ) Oil cooler system fully replaced Crank reground dynamically balanced flywheel and clutch Arp Flywheel bolts Arp Head studs RND Upgraded mains bolts ACL Duraglide main shells King Race Big end shells FCP H Beam rods with ARP 2000 Bolts Woosner 86.5 pistons Modified head gasket Piper single springs New INI Lifters New Oil pump Valves re Machined Valve seats re-cut Head and block mating surfaces skimmed Modified Ko4 Turbo manifold Upgrade RND standard oil cooler hoses Its assembled and back in the car, it also already has 110 miles on it under our break in procedure. Proving well so far its ready for our customer to do the last of the running in miles. Wont be long before this thing is back and turned up onto full power, hopefully some interesting gains to be made from our light modifications to the Ko4 manifold.

Eds inlet manifold Forged engine Airtec front mount intercooler Nortech v band manifold Turbosmart Hypergate 44 Having run with plenty of boost for well over a year, it's new owner wanted to make sure it was as on form as possible for the parts fitted. Sitting at 2.6bar peak pressure (holding 2.4) we have managed to get it past 500hp and 480 +lbs on standard cams ! Back to back runs at final boost 😎

Dyno run cut short as it blew out the lambda sensor With a goal of 330 Hp needless to say this customer is certainly happy 😎
