January was historically a busy month for the Racecourse, when we weren't flooded racing used to continue through the winter months. On 13th January 1965 we had 658 entries resulting in an 8 race card, with 229 runners! This was a new record, taking the title from our friends at Chepstow Racecourse who had 195 runners in 1964. #Worcester300years
If you live in Worcester you will know that the Racecourse is located on a floodplain, the name 'Pitchcroft' derives from the site's full name 'Pitchcroft Holme' meaning the inner island, referring to the area acting as a floodplain for the city. Back on the 12th January 1861 the Racecourse had flooded, but being so cold it had frozen and turned into an ice rink! Now we don't have any photos from the event itself unfortunately, but thought you might enjoy this young man utilising the floodwater for a spot of rowing! #Worcester300years
