“Remember when we mentioned that we each got to choose 1 big activity on this trip? ...The Blonde had her yoga and meditation retreat in December and now it’s time for the Beard’s month of farming in Denmark! We’re already 2 weeks into our time on the farm and it has proven to be one of the most fruitful (or veggieful😉) experiences of our travels yet. ⁣ ⁣ So far the Beard has been out in the field picking vegetables, pulling weeds, riding tractors and building fences for the piglets. The Blonde has been using those fresh veggies picked from the field to cook up meals in the cafe, and is trying her best to pick up some Danish as she serves the customers. We’ll swap roles and tools this week 🔪 👩🏼‍🌾 👨🏻‍🍳 🚜!⁣ ⁣ It might not sound like much but the amount we’ve learned about the wonderful family who owns this farm, about ourselves, and about our connection to nature has been invaluable.” - The Beard 👨🏻‍🌾 and The Blonde 👩🏼‍🌾

“Following 1-month of studying and living in Costa Rica, Jule and I landed in Belize, then hopped in the back of a beaten up truck to ride 3-hours into the deep jungle to live in malapas atop Mayan mounds. Local workers came to and from the isolated bamboo farm each day, leaving us in complete solitude during nights & weekends. As a Photojournalist undergrad, Jule documented our experiences via notepad and lens. We learned and worked through the entire process of planting, harvesting, and naturally processing bamboo wood for conversion into cutting boards and various creations, to sell and raise money for the farm. Most of the workers were blood related, if not, they were still family and treated us as family. They welcomed us onto their lands and into their workspace, as we traded skills and time with one another. In the mornings, we woke to harvest abundant offerings of fruits and veggies from the land. As afternoon rainstorms followed, termites prepared to raid our huts from nearby nests and chew up the inner woodworkings, only to crawl out and return home. Howler monkeys circled our hut in the mid night, screaming and exiling corrupt members. Each day brought new wild visitors, from the Fer de Lance to hoards of tarantulas. We heard endless tales of close encounters with the world’s deadliest creatures and picked up a few stories of our own. By the end, when our legs had been ravaged by mosquitoes and stomachs eaten by parasites, we received warning of the oncoming Hurricane Earl. The locals returned to their families and we boarded up a room in the main house to protect just our belongings and the farm dogs. We were up all night, pressing our backs against the mattresses that blocked the windows. The storm brewed into the early morning, as we awaited the return of our local family. I have never felt more vulnerable and small compared to our powerful and unpredictable earth. These moments of giving back to the land, while being almost stripped of everything, set into our hearts and souls. We feel the calling rising again, soon to return to one of our most valued homes.” - #WWOOFer @gnovisuals 🇧🇿 WWOOF.net
