Have you aligned your finder scope ? This time of year one of the most common conversations we have with customers who have purchased or been gifted an astronomical telescopes for Christmas is I can't see anything ! What am I doing wrong ? One of the most common things that is overlooked is aligning the finder-scope (the little lower power pointing aid on the top of your telescope). Doing this is very simple and will allow you to find objects in the night sky easily. The steps to follow are as follows : 1. Using the lowest power eyepiece find an object in the distance that you can focus on like a telegraph pole, chimney pot or aerial. Centre that object in the eyepiece and lock the axis on the scope so it doesn't move. 2. If you have a red dot finder using the controls on the base and side of the finder rotate them so that the red dot is projected over the object that you aligned in the eyepiece. 3. If you have an optical finder use the three screws (Two on some finders) to align the cross hair over the object. 4. Once aligned it should be that the object located in the finder is the same as in the eyepiece, so when you point your finder at the Moon it will be seen in the eyepiece. As longer as you don't remove or knock your finder it should stay aligned but it does pay sometimes, to check its alignment every so often. Remember to turn off your finder if it is a red dot finder as there's nothing more frustrating than a flat battery on a decent observing night. Any Questions ? Just ask.....
