The UK's largest history festival lands in Broad Chalke, Wiltshire this summer. Of course the Chalke was home to a certain Sir Terry Pratchett, renowned history buff and legendary writer of books. With such festivities in Terry's back garden, what could be more appropriate than the presence of his own shed! From designs by Paul Kidby, Evil Harry Dread's Shed of Doom will be built at the festival, through which visitors can enter a recreation of Terry's writing chapel. If you missed the Terry Pratchett: Hisworld Exhibition, it's another chance to visit your favourite author's place of work. With talks by Rob Wilkins and Paul Kidby, it's sure to be a fitting celebration of the man in the hat in the glorious valley he called home! Today is a sad day. It's been three years since Terry passed. But Terry didn't let sadness pass unquestioned. He fought. Today we'd like to use our humble platform to encourage as many people as possible to do the same - for those still living through the dark times. Learn, support, discuss, donate, share.. do whatever you can... Terry was a patron of RICE - The Research Institute for the Care of Older People, their site is a wonderful place to start learning what part you can play in the fight. The Alzheimer's Society Dementia Friends programme (https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/) provides simple, practical advice on how we can ALL help, and which will genuinely aid you in helping people suffering dementia continue to enjoy their lives and continue being an active part of our communities. A Dementia Friends face-to-face session takes about one hour, and everyone will take something away from it. Get involved. Get your workplace involved. If you can't get to a session, their site is full of resources, accessible to us all. The National Dementia Helpline (0300 222 11 22) provides huge solace and understandable information to those experiencing dementia, their carers and their friends. It allows people to ask the most distressing question from the comfort of home, they need support to keep providing such an outstanding service. We can't yet cure this embuggerance... but there really are a hundred ways we can all help right now. If you're remembering Sir Terry today, do so with great fondness, respect and admiration... and please, do something to keep his fight going.
