Thank you everyone who came to the NGS garden opening last Sunday. We had a very successful day and raised a lot, (haven't asked Rupert for exact figures but gate alone would be £1000) for our key charities : MacMillan and smile train. Thank you to everyone who came to make tea, serve cake, BBQ and direct traffic. We could not have done it alone! Lastly, thank you for all your support of Bere Mill. It helps hugely to know how much everyone is behind our efforts to restore and rebuild!
Please do join us tomorrow 1.30-5pm for the NGS garden opening at Bere Mill. The Tufton Smallholding will be selling plants and jams, the butchery will be open and there will be teas, cakes and the first of the year's BBQ's!!

The magnificent River Test, some Spring crocuses and a beautiful Belted Galloway - all found at Bere Mill, Whitchurch in Hampshire during yesterday’s opening. The cake was delicious too! And the garden owners opened despite a devastating fire just 5 weeks ago, which destroyed the majority of the mill. That’s why @nationalgardenscheme volunteers are the absolute best. 🐄 🌷🍰 . . . . . #beremill #ngs #nationalgardenscheme #whitchurch #opengardens #charity #beltedgalloway #crocus #flowers #garden #river #hampshire #mothersday #rivertest #butchery

On Sunday 10th June, the Bere Mill Gardens will be open exclusively for festival-goers. 🌿🍃🌷🌼🌳🌻🌲🌺 Did you know? The garden’s design and balance is heavily influenced by the great gardens of Japan and includes mediterranean, traditional English herbaceous and bog planting, as well as orchards and riverside marginals. There are modern sculptures by Robert Muir and David Nash and occasional ephemeral works by Andy Goldsworthy.

Despite the devestating fire at Bere Mill, reconstruction is underway and we will be back on Sunday 10th June! The 18th century water mill is surrounded by contemporary gardens, water meadows and a farm which, worked on traditional lines, produces rare breed beef and lamb. Basil Merrett (1930-1950), original sketch on card of Bere Mill. Basil Merrett was born in 1910 and educated at Craft school, Lydney, Gloucestershire. This is just one of a 1,000 works he created of this size, each heavily filled with handwritten text on the reverse. The work was created in series, each numbered and included authors, musicians, religious images and prominent figures from history. Basil Merrett was institutionalized in 1945 at Bethlem Royal Hospital in London as a psychiatric patient. #beremill #whitchurch #whitchurchhantsnostalgia #localhistory #basilmerrett #originalsketch #nostalgia #whitchurchhantsnostalgia

Utterly devastated for @dinahnabarro and family - for the catastrophic damage to their beautiful home and to such a historic and important building. All our thoughts are with you and your family and all affected at such a sad and challenging time. @chrissieferngrove took this picture yesterday of what’s left standing. Credit to our emergency services for all they did. #thisiswhitchurchhants #supportlocal #beremill #risefromtheashes #papermill #rivertest #historicbuilding #18thcenturyhistory
I am utterly devastated by news of the total #destruction overnight by #fire of #historic Bere Mill, at #Whitchurch in #Hampshire. I’ve known it since childhood. It was where Henri de #Portal, a Huguenot refugee, invented bank note paper in the mid-18th century. #tragedy
Thoughts with the Nabarro family this morning.
