REMEMBER REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER: Bonfire night is fast approaching and we are once again seeing more and more of our furry friends upset by these noisy delights! We still sadly too often, have owners coming in the night before or even the day of Bonfire night once their pet is already distressed. Please don't hesitate to contact the surgery and speak to one of our vets or qualified veterinary nurses about your individual pet's needs. Below are some hints and tips to help make sure the night is just as enjoyable for your pet as it is for you! 1) Walk dogs early to minimise the risk of firework exposure and keep cats indoors. This is also a good time to make sure your pets microchip details are up-to-date, in case of any escapes. 2) Keep all windows and doors closed, and close any curtains or blinds. It's also a good idea to turn the radio or TV on to mask the noise from outside. 3) Provide a safe area or "den" where your pet can retreat to. 4) Provide distractions in the form of new toys etc... 5) Don't leave your pet home alone. At Avondale, we have a variety of products to help your pet. Some pets may just require over the counter products and others may need a prescription product. Last year we had great feedback from our clients on a new product called Sileo - a prescription only gel which is given into the cheek of dogs and has a calming effect. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with the practice if you would like to discuss anything further!
