22nd of June 2017 Three and a half years ago we started the Youth Café, a safe and welcoming place for young people to meet, have fun and learn new skills through volunteering. We now have over 46 young people volunteering at the Café Project with some of them winning awards for their voluntary role along the way. As in previous years, we wanted to give our young volunteers recognition for the work they do and Voluntary Action Shetland, through Neil Pearson, the Youth Volunteering Development Office, made out certificates for them again this year and we invited Ian Scott, one of our local councillors along, to present the Certificates. The Youth Centre received a very generous donation from Sylvia Nicolson and family following the death of her husband Alistair. Alistair Nicolson was the mainstay of Scalloway Youth Club and Youth Centre for many years, supporting, encouraging and helping many young people during this time as a youth worker and one of the areas that Alistair helped to promote was sport. In memory of this wonderful man, the Youth Centre decided to purchase trophies for five sports and ran competitions as a lasting legacy of this very gentle giant, fondly known as Muckle. All trophies and medals were presented by the lovely Sylvia Nicolson.

As a Wellness Programme the Scalloway Youth Cafe Project took a wonderful group of girls on an overnight trip to Unst. The focus of the trip was on well-being, helping us remember what it is like to have a super time without the need of phones and social media (just look at the photos!) Everybody (including Sonia and me!) had a brilliant break together in Unst, enjoying each others' company and laughing ... a lot!! It was great way to forget the stresses of daily life and we all felt the benefit of our short break together. We are SO lucky to live in a beautiful place so let's all find the time to remember that, get out there and have a blast :))

The Youth Cafe had a special visitor Saturday night when Carol came down to help Sonia teach the young people the Palais Glide in preparation for the Big Lunch on the 17th of June. There was Pool, snooker and darts upstairs and sports galore including the favourite Dodgeball. Our fabulous Chelsey was very busy making Milkshakes in the kitchen while others just chilled playing music in the music room. All and all it was a great night with young people doing what young people do best...Having fun :)
