Ramsgate Tunnels
Description
Now open to the public these fascinating tunnels bring to life to what it was like to shelter and live underground in Ramsgate during WW2 Beneath Ramsgate lies an abandoned labyrinth of tunnels which extends for more than 3 miles around the town. This unique underground city was constructed as part of the town’s Air Raid Precautions in 1939 and includes a former main line railway tunnel dating back to 1863.

Just a few pictures keeping you up with progress. Our new office/ticket office now has a coat of railway style colours - we've still got to do the dog-toothing along the top. It now also has a ramp for those with limited mobility. Inside as well as the ticket office the shop is beginning to take shape. Further along the tunnels draughtsman is looking through the station plans while listening to his wind-up i-pod. Don't forget there are the telephones to listen to real people telling you their memories of the tunnels in the 1940s and the touch screen to show you the bits of the tunnel you can't actually get to and where all the entrances used to be.
The 1pm Special Mainline Railway Tunnel Tour on the 6th May has now sold out. There are still a few spaces on the 3pm tour but they are going fast.

SPECIAL MAINLINE RAILWAY TUNNEL TOURS..........On 6th May we will be running two special guided tours through the full length of our Victorian mainline tunnel from the southern to northern portal. This is a special tour and not part of the normal tours we operate. The walk is approximately one and a half miles and is mainly in the dark (bring your own torch or we will provide one). En route you will see one of the steam vents, the access to the 1939 ARP tunnel, the wartime entrance steps to the tunnel from Dumpton Park Drive, the junction where the 1936 spur tunnel to Hereson Road left the main tunnel, the site of Tunnel Town, the monolithic chimney and the now blocked northern portal. Due to the uneven nature of the floor this tour is not suitable for for people with limited mobility or children under 12. The tours depart at 1pm and 3pm and must be pre-booked. THE 1pm TOUR MAY BE BOOKED HERE http://buytickets.at/ramsgatetunnels/94641 and THE 3pm TOUR MAY BE BOOKED HERE http://buytickets.at/ramsgatetunnels/94531

Tunnel Town is growing - should we perhaps start taking bookings for the summer air raids.......
Thanks to everyone who heeded the warning - all tickets for our March Railway Tunnel Tour are now sold out. We haven't got a tour of the railway tunnel in April - something called Easter is getting in the way but keep a watch out for our May tour dates.
