Why do garages try and sell me a water pump when I have my cambelt changed....? No, we are not trying to extract a little bit more money from you, we are actually trying to save you some money! A water pump costs upto about £50.00 and are generally driven by the timing belt (cambelt). If we do not replace the pump at the time of the cambelt, and the water pump fails, you'll have the expense of paying labour and for a new belt, along with the water pump depending on how the water pump fails. This example, all the fins have broken off meaning coolant cannot flow around your engine, and will result in overheating, and possible headgasket failure or damaged cylinder head. If the bearings seize, this can take out the cambelt, and can result in the pistons striking valves, and that as you can imagine, isn't a good thing! Spend the extra and save in the long run!
