The components have been selected and developed to allow the birds’ own self regulatory systems to operate satisfactorily. Many breeders recognise the need to supply a particular nutrient, but if this is done in such a way that other nutrients are thrown out of balance the scheme may be counter-productive and fail to maintain the birds on the best of health. Edition, 1996 Trial Notes The trials were carried out using the following food stuffs: 50% Plain Canary / 25% White Millet / 7.5% Yellow Millet / 7.5% Panicum Millet / 7.5% Japanese Millet / 2.5% Niger Seed. 1. A good quality grit was always available and replenished weekly. (All old material being replaced by new.) 2.Murphy's Minerals fed daily in finger drawers. 3.Cuttlefish bone was available but consumption was at a low level. Observations during breeding. 1.100% of nest boxes were completely dry and appeared almost unused, accepting the fact no disease was present. 2.The normally large, wet, voluminous excreta from the hen birds was absent. In consequence, hen birds were not badly swollen and the cage environment was improved by the absence of smelly materials. Hen birds also quickly recovered their pre-breeding season condition.

Whatever your choice of bird or level of commitment to the hobby, generally there are two main types of outlet from which you will obtain your bird; Specialist Breeders and the better quality pet shops. Whatever the outlet you choose the essential requirement is only to purchase your bird from an environment that is clean and pest or disease free. Such conditions are easy to spot at an early stage by looking out for the following:- Avoid any source where conditions are obviously dirty and the birds overcrowded. Do not be encouraged to buy where other animals such as mice, rabbitd, rats, etc. are in close proximity to the bird. Look for any possible source of airbourne infection, e.g. sales of loose foodstuffs close to the birds. Airbourne infections can be just as harmful as more obvious sources. As a general ruel the ideal source should be one where birds, animals and foodstuffs are kept in separate and hygienic environments. Always remember that a few extra moments spent in careful choice and selection will benefit both you and your bird.
