Keep yourself warm Wear several thin layers, rather than one thick layer. If possible go for clothes made from natural fibres such as wool, cotton or fleecy fabrics Most body heat is lost through the head and neck, so if you're chilly (even indoors), wear a hat and scarf Food is a vital source of energy which helps to keep your body warm. Make sure you eat well and have regular hot meals that include potatoes, pasta, bread or rice. Try porridge with hot milk for breakfast and soups and stews for lunch and dinner. Put a blanket over yourself for extra warmth; Air is cooler at ground level, so you'll be warmer if you put your feet up. When it's really cold, thermal underwear, bed socks and even a hat can all help to keep you warmer. Using a hot water bottle or an electric blanket is another way to keep warm in the night, but never use them both together. Also, it is not safe to leave some electric blankets plugged in overnight, switch them off when you get into bed.
Keep warm in the cold snap Keep the heat in: Shut doors to keep heat in the rooms used the most and stop draughts from badly fitting windows and doors. Don't put furniture in front of radiators as the heat will be wasted. Don't leave your heating on a low setting all day; this will not save you money. Instead set your timer so that it comes on just before you wake up and before you get in at night. Close the curtains as soon as it gets dark; this will reduce draughts and heat loss through the windows.
