Private Art Tuition in Norwich with Amrita Illingworth. Painting, Sculpture, Printing. All ages welcome. Friendly encoraging approach. I work as a freelance art tutor based in Norwich, available for hire to teach art in whatever way suits you. I have a light and spacious studio 20 minutes' walk west of the city centre where I can teach up to three people, or I can lead larger group workshops at an alternative venue of your choice. Many of my clients come for private one-to-one tuition, adults and children alike.

I offer instruction in the basics of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture; and I'm happy working in the realm of traditional representation (portraits, still life, landscapes etc) as well as the more abstract or imaginative modes of art.

To begin with I take a light and fun approach to familiarizing students with the world of image making, using interactive games and easy exercises, and then gradually introduce more skill-based practice. Like Lars I am a firm believer that anyone can enjoy art-making if they want to, given the right guidance, and I think that having fun is an essential ingredient to learning -- so I make it a priority! Of course you may already have experience of making art, and might just be looking for fresh inspiration or technical advice. I can provide this too.

I'll consider any teaching proposition, such as schools, camps, parties, and work with businesses, and I'm CRB registered. I have a degree in Fine Art which I studied at Central St Martin's School of Art, and I've been teaching since 2009. Most importantly perhaps, I've enjoyed making art all my life and I love sharing the pleasure of it with others.

"Working with Amrita has given me the opportunity to explore my individual art desires and negotiate with my tutor in a relaxed environment, free from the constraints of a curriculum. It is my favourite lesson of the week."
(Amber aged 15, June 2016)

"Amrita was a superb find after searching for a more mature and in depth art class for teenagers. It allows them to gain confidence in ability and they have the freedom to explore what interests them in the art world."
(Perdita, Amber's Mother, June 2016)

"Paint is for everyone young and old, you just have to believe" (Lars, age 12)

A happy student. I introduced her to the work of Howard Hodgkin ( who sadly died recently) and she loved his use of colour so much that we decided she should have a go at copying one of his works, 'Seascape 1996'. Copying the works of the great masters of the past has long been a traditional practice, and it has been interesting to apply the same approach to a modern master. She now has her very own Hodgkin hanging on her wall, and is currently working on a second one. I've been thinking another popular artist whose work one could quite easily make a copy of is Rothko. I hope I can tempt a student to try this at some point! Your very own Rothko! Incidentally there is a nice exhibition of Hodgkin's work currently on at the National Portrait gallery, well worth a visit.

I had a great time on Saturday with Jack Godfrey, Sophie Skinner, Angie Partis, Freya Henderson Dalston, and Jessica Perry, playing with paint. The results speak for themselves! All the artworks were created collaboratively, either in pairs or threes. Everyone threw themselves in wholeheartedly and it was a pleasure to lead. Now thinking of when to do the next one!

Here are some paintings created at a workshop I led with the 'Golden Triangle Girls' W.I., back in 2011. The participants paired up and took turns making marks on the sheet of paper which lay between them like a chess board, an interactive game I often play with my students. On the 'Art of Collaboration' workshop on 28th January, this is one of the activities we'll be engaging in. We will also play a similar exercise in larger groups working on a larger scale. This approach is always great fun, and a good way to learn about what you can do with paint, as well as being a different kind of communication between two or more people.

This is a detail of a rather nice abstract piece that one of my students is working on. He has quite severe Parkinson's disease so we often work collaboratively. But increasingly I'm encouraging him to do more of the work, so it's more his own. The results are often very inspiring, as is the case here!
