Melrose Sevens
Description
Rugby Sevens was founded in Melrose in 1883. Local butcher Ned Haig is credited with the idea with his employer, David Sanderson to raise club funds. The first Rugby Sevens tournament was played in Melrose in 1883. The game is now played on an global stage and is testimony to its founder in the Scottish Borders town, Ned Haig. Haig is rightly creditted with the idea however his employer, David Sanderson, may well have had considerable influence at the outset.
The 14th of April 2018 will see the 128th playing of the Melrose Sevens and it is proposed to continue an extended tournament with guest teams coming from far and near. Previous years have included sevens guests Randwick and Manly from Australia, Bay of Plenty from New Zealand, University of Free State and Stellenbosch from South Africa. Europe has been represented by guests from England, France, Portugal and Ireland to name a few. The town of Melrose takes on a carnival atmosphere with the day being considered a main social date in the sporting calendar. To complement the main Melrose 7s tournament other attractions are being planned for the international event including a vets tournament and an after event party.
The ten most prestigious of the Borders tournaments make up a league competition known as the Kings of the Sevens. Teams competing gain points depending on how far they progress in each tournament, the winner gains ten points, runner up seven points, semi-finalists five points and teams eliminated at the quarter final stage gain three points.
