From time to time, I have the pleasure to speak to people willing to share their piercing experiences, for better or worse, in the hopes of educating others. This is one of those posts, and contains graphic details...so don't say we didn't warn you! A young lady called Yazz has decided to share what happened when she went for the increasingly popular "Snake Eyes" piercing, a horizontal tongue piercing... "I got my snake eyes piercing done because I knew a couple of people who had it and I thought it looked sooo cute. i knew the risk factors and what could possibly happen, but you know everyone thinks, it’s not going to be me, well there it was, it happened to me. It was good for the first two days, but then the third day it started bruising slightly and swelling more than what I thought was normal. It started bleeding somewhat out of one side, but when I looked it up it, it said bleeding was normal for the first few days, so I didn’t think anything of it. Then the fourth day came and the bruising was even more severe, I was sitting in my first class and my tongue just started gushing blood! I went to the bathroom and swished my mouth out with water and alcohol free mouthwash, like I was told to do clean it and if something like this were to happen. It finally stopped bleeding, but then it happened again in my third class, so I did the same thing. It stopped bleeding for a short time, but then started again, and at this point it was just bleeding and bleeding, the bruising and swelling got to the point where I was scared and very concerned. I ended up sitting in the school clinic for the rest of the day and taking the bus home because my Mum was busy at work and wasn’t answering her phone. When i got home it was still bleeding and when my Mum got home we went to a piercing shop near my house and right when I got there, I just showed them my tongue and they immediately knew what the issue was, mind you, I had to go walk in there holding a bucket because my tongue kept bleeding! When the piercing was removed the piercer said that when you get a piercing that is horizontal through the tongue you can’t see any nerves or veins you are going through and mine was pierced right along one. It continued to bleed all night long after the removal. I literally had to cut pads in half and put it in my mouth to collect the blood and i had to sleep with a bucket next to my bed just in case the bleeding became too much in the middle of the night. The good thing is, the tongue is one of the fastest healing things in/on your body so it is healing; like the bleeding and discoloration went away completely in about a week. But now I have nerve damage and taste bud damage to the tip of my tongue. ***We don't carry out this piercing, and this is one of the reasons why! The tongue is actually 8 separate muscles, and this "piercing" pins 2 of them together, resulting in chipped and broken teeth, a permanent lisp, gum, tooth enamel, bone and muscle erosion and in more severe cases, taste bud and nerve damage, and, due to the bilateral positioning, the damage done to the muscles of the tongue will not heal.****
