HWCAA aims to provide local people communal growing, learning horticulture & allotment keeping together, whilst improving the local enviroment. HWCAA is an open access allotment for all the community. No matter your skill set, time commitment or availability - everyone is equal and welcome here.

The association aims to provide vocational employment opportunities in horticulture/farming for individuals in Hounslow whilst at the same time improving the quality of the urban environment.

We are on a site at a underused allotment owned by the London Borough of Hounslow at Faggs Road/Heron Way, Feltham.

The Allotment has a number of chemical free growing beds and poly-tunnel so you can experience growing from seed right the way through, some livestock (chickens and a rabbit), orchard trees, summer fruits, herbs, flowers and all the wildlife that goes with them.

There are hives on site managed by a professional bee-keeper.

We are generally around during the weekends Sat 11-4 and same on Sundays but leave a message for us on Facebook as we do pop down there at impromptu times during the week so can meet you and orient you and get you started.

There's no pressure to do it "the right way" as nature has no right or wrong ways it's just nature...sometimes things grow well sometimes they don't but learning and experiencing it is where it's at....

So if you are all fingers and thumbs or green fingered impresario come on down and join us. Help us improve our miniature farm, weeding, planting, spreading compost, maintenance and improvement of our facilities. Meeting good people.

Donation of things such as building materials, timber, gravel, paving slabs and any farming materials would be much appreciated.

Annual Membership is £20
£2.00 for your plate donation
Volunteers are welcome with the aim of bringing you into the fold!

Allotment Garden: Vegetable, Fruit & Herb Gardening on an Allotment, General Gardening Help and Advice

Do you keep birds? Did you know it's been officially announced bird flu is in UK - first case in Lincolnshire - read more here and share with poultry and bird owning friends Urgent Update Allotment Poultry Keepers Allotment Garden Newsletter From John Harrison Allotment Garden Update Dear Rhyn I know a lot of allotmenteers keep poultry or other people keep poultry on their allotment site so I'm sending this copy of our poultry newsletter update about the avian flu outbreak in the UK which is potentially a serious threat to those keeping poultry If it's not of interest or you're not in the UK, my apologies. A highly pathogenic avian influenza (subtype H5N8) has been found in wild birds in Austria, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. As of Friday 16th December 2016 a confirmed case has reached the UK. A turkey farm in Louth, Lincolnshire, is the first confirmed case and the vast majority of the flock of 5,000 died from the outbreak. The remaining flock will by now have been culled. Poultry and Captive Bird Restrictions & Protection Zone The Government's Chief Vet had, as a result of the outbreak, put in place measures to protect the UK. These measures apply whether you have 2 hens or 20,000 and covers all back garden keepers and small holders. The current 30 day restriction, in place until 05th January 2017, is as follows: “Keepers of poultry and other captive birds are now required to keep their birds indoors, or take appropriate steps to keep them separate from wild birds.” Having checked with DEFRA, those who fail to comply will be looking at a hefty fine. As a result of this confirmed UK outbreak further restictions have been put in place in the vicinity of Louth, Lincolnshire: "We have put in place a 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone around the infected farm to limit the risk of the disease spreading." If you suspect you live within this Protection or Surveillance Zone please contact Defra by calling 03459 33 55 77 for further information. Signs of Avian Flu It is important to keep a close eye on your flock during this time. The Government advises that: Clinical signs that poultry keepers should look for in their birds include a swollen head, discolouration of neck and throat, loss of appetite, respiratory distress, diarrhoea and fewer eggs laid – although these vary between species of bird. And further that: If poultry keepers or the general public find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or gulls, or five or more dead wild birds of other species in the same location, they should report them to the Defra helpline by calling 03459 33 55 77. Government Press Release & Further Information I've put the content of last week's Newsletter up on my blog. I have included links for suppliers of poultry housing and fencing for those who need additional structures to keep their flock covered and protected - Avian Flu Further Guidance & Resources It is important to remember that if your flock becomes infected they will be culled, so although containing them during the risk period may seem cruel, it is necessary. The full Government guidance can be found here - Avian Flu Guidance & Lincolnshire Protection Zone We've also set up a forum thread for anyone with questions on what to do with their flock and how to best protect them until the outbreak has passed - Avian Flu Forum Thread Have A Great Break! Once again, my apologies if this isn't relevant or helpful. If you know any poultry keepers, it would help us all if you check they're aware of this problem.
