Kyle Community Pontoons
Description
Community-owned and managed 21-berth pontoon facility in Kyle of Lochalsh on the stunning west coast of Scotland. In April 2014 Kyle & Lochalsh Community Trust took over the ownership and management of the pontoons from Highland Council. The Trust provides berthing facilities for both visitors to Kyle and commercial boat operators in the centre of the village. In 2015, after securing financial assistance from the European Fisheries Fund, Highland Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, we developed the pontoons to provide increased capacity.
The pontoons now accommodate up to 20 vessels - previously it was seven - and is open to commercial and leisure users alike. The pontoons allow the public to make the most of the facilities and magnificent scenery that Kyle and the surrounding area has to offer.
Kyle Harbour sits a stone’s throw from the Skye Bridge, within the sheltered waters of Loch Alsh. It is a lively, deep water port with a variety of cargo, fishing, commercial leisure boats, small cruise liners all frequenting the harbour in addition to leisure boats.
Until 1995 the ferry to Skye left from the slipway by the Lochalsh Hotel. Vehicles were carried across Kyle Akin (the strip of water separating Skye from the mainland) to the pier opposite at Kyleakin. The slipway now provides an excellent trailer launching facility for leisure craft.
The pontoons can presently accommodate up to 20-21 vessels alongside. As from the end o May 2017 you should be able to 'plug in' as we will have power on the pontoons.
On shore, the Community Trust also owns and operates the building housing public toilets and showers. Located close to the pontoons in the main central car park, these are easily accessible to visiting sailors. A much-needed refurbishment of the building was completed in the summer of 2015 and a self-service laundrette facility opened in February 2016, offering another important service to visitors and local residents alike.
The facilities are open from 08:00 to 20:00 daily April to October.
Within a few minutes by foot, there is a variety of shops including Co-operative supermarket, butchers, pharmacy, Post Office and banks. There is also a good range of hotels, B&Bs, pubs and restaurants.
Water is provided on the pontoon and waste disposal facilities are to hand.
