More than 30 architects, engineers and related constructional professionals met up today at 8am to attend the RIBA Exeter Branch "breakfast event" at The Atrium Studio School, within South Dartmoor Community College. Opened officially on the 15th of January 2016, The Atrium provides an education for students aspiring to professional careers in areas including; Architecture, Interior Design, Ecology, Structural Engineering, Surveying and Planning. Those gathered and enthused by the bright, airy quality surroundings and fortified by tea, coffee, hot bacon rolls and pastries, heard Principal of the Atrium, Matt Messias explain the concept of Studio Schools and The Atrium in particular, as a brand new type of school and educational experience for students in Years 9-13, specialising in the Built Environment – the first of its kind in the South West. Stuart Dodd from Satellite Architects then gave a fascinating presentation of how his practice firstly won the opportunity to design this and other satellite schools, in conjunction with Kier construction and then explained briefly part of the the process for the school's design, before some of the Atrium's new intake of students, clearly very proudly, showed small groups of attendees around their new environment. My thanks as Branch Chair go to; Matt Messias and the students of The Atrium for hosting, Stuart Dodd as architect for giving an insight into the design and especially to Catherine Gandon for organising what was truly a fascinating, educational, informative and entertaining event. On behalf of the RIBA and local Plymouth and Exeter Branches, I look forward to developing further ties and mentoring opportunities with The Atrium Studio School.
