This handsome Staffie cross is Boysie. Overnight, seven year old fit and lively Boysie developed a large, solid lump on his upper left shoulder. Within days he was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma, a type of bone cancer with the real probability of having to have his leg amputated. Fortunately the Fitzpatrick Referrals Oncology centre were able to save Boysie's leg by performing a partial scapulectomy, removing part of his shoulder blade. After two days Boysie was weight bearing when standing and arrived home a week later with instructions to get him walking equally on all four legs. We started with a couple of exercises to strengthen the muscles of the left front leg and after a few weeks, with a lot of work from his owner Catriona, he was soon able to use the leg when walking slowly. In hydrotherapy he was more than happy to swim and walk slowly in the treadmill using all four legs equally. However, when left to his own devices, he much preferred to race around on three legs. After six weeks Catriona noticed that even when asked to walk slowly he seemed reluctant to use his left front leg and when he did, was sometimes lame. When another lump formed above his elbow, fearing the worst, Catriona took Boysie back to see the vet but fortunately he was given the all clear, hurrah! With the soft tissues now healed, Boysie had a myotherapy treatment and he made it quite clear he wanted the neck, shoulders and back treated. Three days after the treatment he got up in the morning not only walking but trotting using his left front leg. Catriona is delighted and said that every day sees him improve and his confidence using the left front leg increases.
