#TravelTuesday - Feedback on a big 5 Kruger adventure at Sabi Sabi: "Our visit to the Kruger Game Park was astonishing. The lodge, food and staff were excellent, but the stars of the show, after the animals of course, was Jabu our driver guide and his all-terrain, four wheel drive, open topped Land Rover. Even without the animals, driving through the bush on single track paths and exploring and following Big Five beasts off-road would have been thrilling. Off- road sorties through the bush are allowed in private parks in order to get close to the Big Five – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino – and in the course of four, three hour game drives we saw them all, and more, close up and personal! We arrived just in time for mid afternoon high tea and the evening game drive starting at four. We met Jabu, his tracker/spotter Richard and our companions in his group, a young honeymoon couple from Columbia. Jabu gave us very specific instructions: no noise, no sudden movements and absolutely no getting out of the truck! We set off and after only a few minutes spotted a leopard kill stashed in a tree. It was an impala, a favorite leopard prey and moving off-road for the first time we circled the tree and found three hyenas half asleep and patiently waiting for the leopard to return to start feeding so that they could pick up the leftovers! Like all the animals we saw, the hyenas were totally relaxed about us and the big green truck only feet from them. This lack of stress was testimony to the consistent care and respect shown to all the creatures in the reserve. Day two began at six and it was the turn of the lions. We soon found three males, sleepy and resting after their last meal and again oblivious to our presence. The females were not far away. There were six together, including a mother and her two daughters, sleeping or grooming each other like friendly house cats! The small animals are fascinating too. Two dwarf mongoose returned our curiosity from the top of their home – an enormous deserted termite mound complete with the tiny resident flat plate lizard, which apparently lives off mongoose poo and keeps the place tidy... The morning drive ended at nine and with a comprehensive breakfast back at the lodge, after which we joined Jabu and our young friends on a walk through the bush. Like everything else this is not compulsory! But Jabu’s guidance on different animal tracks and droppings and plants was absorbing and well worth the effort - and his ever present large bore rifle was reassuring...After lunch the evening drive again began at four. Leopards are not easy to find but we soon came across a large, beautiful male padding nonchalantly down the road. Jabu and Richard were brilliant at predicting where the animals were heading and we headed off- road again to meet him as he turned off to pursue his next meal. We kept abreast of him as he stalked a large antelope, maintaining only a short distance as he patiently worked his way closer. He was spotted however and decided to wait, no doubt for darkness, so we left him, thankful for such a fantastic encounter. Before we stopped for sundowners overlooking the River Sabi, searching for hippos, we stopped to look at a tiny yellow chameleon on a bush by the roadside, spotted in the fading evening light by our hawk-eyed guides. The amazing ecosystem which is the African bush supports an incredible diversity of creatures and birds. Day three was even more extraordinary. Six vehicles eventually gathered round a lazing cheetah who had found himself a shallow depression in the light bush in which to rest. Few had been seen in recent months but now they were drifting back from the main park. Like all the animals we saw, he was relaxed, very healthy and totally at ease with the proximity and attention of humans in their big green trucks. Another large group of elephants followed, with zebra and not one but three massive rhino, all close enough to touch. The last animal we saw as we headed home was a very large male kudu, with magnificent horns, hiding from us just yards from the road. Yet another fantastic day. Our pick-up for the airport was at one and we spent our last few hours on the lodge deck, looking out over the waterhole a few hundred yards away. From there, our last sightings before we left this beautiful place were elephants, a hunting kingfisher, a static heron and a puku and calf, moving slowly across the open ground, warily watching us as we watched them. We had enjoyed the experience of a lifetime and as we returned to the crowded commotion of human activity, we immediately missed the wild tranquility and unpredictability of the bush. May we return there soon."
