facebook.comThis weekend will be our 6 month anniversary since opening our doors to the public. Setting up a new venture of any sort is always a challenge but we have relished every moment. The people we have met on the journey so far have been awesome, wether it’s been working with individuals in classes or training the clubs and sports teams. We want to thank you for all your support so far. We are not re-inventing the wheel here but our fundamental values will always be the same, and they are to basically give our members the time and effort they deserve and to invest in their progress and ultimately share the journey of wherever they want to get to. Ultimately we want to get more people moving... like our brand name suggests. Elland U12’s rugby league lads have been doing their pre-season with us for a few weeks so far. It’s been good to work with the coaches helping develop the fitness levels across the board. We also tailor our sports team sessions specifically to what movements and energy systems are associated with whatever they may require! When attending a gym one of the most important elements to include in your thought process is goal setting! We have spent years working in commercial gyms with thousands of members going through the motions. These guys would come to the gym day in day out like clockwork, at least 5 times a week, but they would never change their routine or even the intensity. Often when speaking to them it was clear many of them didn’t have a specific goal so there was no way to measure their progress or allow any sort of progressive planning process to keep working towards their non-existent goal! Usually the majority of people’s goals tends to focus around how they look, but if you’re not bothered about that or happy with the way you look then maybe you need to set yourself other specific goals. The bottom line is if you exercise smarter then you have a higher chance of living longer... FACT! So keep hitting the gym but set yourself small specific short term goals. At mov3ment we have a white board where we measure 5 specific set tests. We do the bleep test, 500m row and also complete a 5 rep max on squat, deadlift and flat bench press. We re-test every 4-6 weeks. Not all members do all 5 tests as they may not be specific for what they want to achieve but it allows them to track progress to build on their last performance be it strength or cardiovascular challenges we throw at them...When they walk in the door they can see the board and it acts as motivation for them to try and beat it! The bottom line is if you set goals you will progress, don’t just go through the motions and try to hone in on what you specifically want to achieve. Keep a note and keep pushing yourself.... why wouldn’t you if it helps you increased your chances to live a healthier, happier, longer life! The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge is a set to be completed in 12 hours. The 3 peaks we will summit are Ingleborough, Pen-Y-Ghent and Whernside. (completed in that order)
We are setting up a group to share our plans for walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks on Sunday May 20th. The challenge will aim to be completed in under 12 hrs. We feel this is a good team challenge that will be fun to train towards and a jolly good day out. If you fancy the challenge then please comment and we can add you to the group. We already have 20 interested (email response) so should be a decent team.

International women’s day... a day to celebrate the power and strength of women from past, present and future... the perfect opportunity to share our latest post regarding women and weight training! We still come up against the psychological barriers around women lifting weights....’but I don’t want to get hench’ ‘I don’t want to look like the hulk’. In relation to yesterday’s post regarding the most common goal in the fitness industry, FAT LOSS, weight training has a major role to play. We try to factor weights into all of our classes as we understand how much more can be achieved with the addition of weights. Don’t get me wrong there is certainly a place for bodyweight exercises and cardio but to achieve optimum results for fat loss, a progressive strength programme will get you to your goal a hell of a lot quicker than without it. Lifting weights for the first time can be scary and daunting but once you have learned the basics the rest is history. So seize the moment, step out of the comfort zone and go lift some weights! We get lots of people coming to the gym that say their main goal is to lose weight! It’s probably the most common goal you come across in the fitness industry! The question is, do you really want to lose weight? Or do you want to lose fat?!! Generally speaking most people want to lose fat not just weight... ultimately weight loss can be down to 3 things. Losing fat, losing muscle or losing water! We spend endless amounts of time trying to break down the psychological barriers built up around the scales. Measuring weight is important, but should never be used as a stand alone measure of success if your goal is fat loss! If you are losing 5kgs in a week I can pretty much guarantee it’s not all fat. So do not be fooled by the scales and make sure you take inch measurements to get a true reflection on your progress! And if you are doing a weight loss course with a primary focus on weight and scales then I suggest you re-evaluate your options!
