Working late today to get this Bosch repaired to go back to a customer. We've just completed a full rebuild on this, and even though it's a high hour machine it should now go on to do many more years loyal service. The Bosch Euro washer is, in my opinion one of the best washing machines ever built

We get a lot of phone calls from customers looking for advice regarding noisy washing machines, the solutions, and the cost involved. One of the most common major failures on a washing machine relating to noise is drum bearings, but also drum shaft being eaten by the detergent. Both faults will appear with similar symptoms, loud noise often described as being like a jet or repetitive banging, depending on how long it has been allowed to go on for sometimes the machine will also leak and some may trip an RCD in the fuse box. In the pictures you will see two types of outer drum, one can be opened, bearings changed and rebuilt and the other increasingly common sealed for life unit that has to be replaced as a whole unit. In most cases the sealed for life type drum is more expensive than the original purchase price of the machine itself nearly always deeming a repair uneconomical. One other issue is the drum shaft as shown in the comparison picture, in this case a combination of detergent and low wash temperatures have allowed the detergent to eat through the aluminium drum shaft legs. This problem would also have to be treated on the same basis as bearings and whether a drum was a sealed unit or not. In short, what we have here in today's machines is a built in obsolescence, a throw away unit that even with the best will in the world isn't viable to repair. A very sad state of affairs indeed. If you need advice and an honest opinion on a repair please call us on 07973 583012
In light of the recent Grenfell Tower fire, alleged to have been started by a fridge freezer, here is some useful information given by UK Whitegoods relating to refrigeration products http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/buying-advice/refrigeration/4296-is-my-fridge-freezer-safe?hitcount=0
Life and death of appliances
An interesting video about how long people would expect an appliance to last, and the unfortunate reality of it. I would add that in the UK I would expect a front loading washing machine to last between 2 & 5 years now. Spares supply isn't really an issue but rather the cost of the part often exceeds the cost of a replacement new machine, especially with 'sealed for life' drums http://www.wearecentralpa.com/news/life-and-death-of-appliances/661049865

Following the recent tumble dryer scandal from Hotpoint Indesit many people are unsure what tumble dryer to buy. I get asked what would I buy if it was my money? Well, I would buy a White Knight over anything else out there, this often comes as a surprise as they are in the lower end of the price bracket. These fantastic machines are built in the UK, parts are readily available at reasonable money both pattern and genuine, the design has changed very little in over 30 years and in over 20 years in the trade I have NEVER seen one of these catch fire. For many years White Knight have been voted Britains most reliable tumble dryer. We often get these available secondhand and once fully serviced are available from £65

We regularly get asked why we won't repair/call out to 'non mainstream' brands of dishwashers such as Swan, Kenwood, Currys, Haier, Bush etc, most of which originate from the far east. Here is a perfect example, a Swan dishwasher, manufacturer unknown, that is 14 months old. The customer pleaded with me to have a look at this dishwasher as it was leaking. After agreeing to bring it to me at the workshop we found two leaks, one from a split inlet valve and one from a hose that hadn't been fitted with any type of retaining clip and although these were both quality issues we could resolve them fairly easily with generic parts. Once the machine was back up and running we found that it would not heat and traced the cause to a faulty element (in the picture) and this is where the fun starts! Swan have no dealer network for spare parts so as far as this machine is concerned it is now scrap, we had to spend an hour at least to get to this point plus time searching through suppliers and internet, time and money lost on an appliance that is designed to be disposable after a year. When purchasing a new appliance we would always recommend a major brand with manufactures service to back it up as the cheapest may be the dearest in the long run, just like this ill fated Swan We are always happy to give advice on what to purchase so please ask if unsure after all no one knows machines like we do!
