Structural Steelwork – Oriam on the Awards Trail We are delighted to have been shortlisted once again in The Institution of Structural Engineers Structural Design Awards for our design and methodology of construction for the Oriam Centre for Performance Sport in Edinburgh. These International Awards attract many major entries and in our group the other projects are The Arthur Ash Stadium in New York and Bilbao’s San Mames Football Stadium Cable Roof Extension, exalted company indeed. We will at least be third – but hopefully first!! This shortlisting follows the same project being shortlisted in the BCSA’a Steel Design Awards and also being under consideration for the Saltire Civil Engineering Awards. It is great news to see our endeavours recognised by the industry.

We are currently looking to appoint an experienced Structural draughtsman on a full-time position (Conversant to Tekla) based at our Head Office, Glengarnock, Ayrshire. The position offers an excellent opportunity to be part of an ever-growing office, excellent working conditions and a friendly working environment. All applicants must have a minimum of 3 years working experience in this role and have a strong knowledge of the structural steel industry; from portal frames/ multi-story structures to stadia. The successful applicant will be responsible; but not limited to: -Reading and working from engineers and client drawings -Generate 3D models using Tekla Structures and provide GA’s within programme dates -Issuing GA’s and full fabrication drawings within programme dates with minimal supervision -Corresponding directly with clients, suppliers, design manager, site & workshop as required. Structural Steelwork - AECC - Conference Centre Trusses Work is progressing well onsite at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. Our onsite crews have begun the task of erecting the large roof trusses within the Conference Centre. These 15 no trusses are approximately 55 meters in length, 4.1m in depth and delivered to site in 4 pieces which are then bolted and welded together onsite within Trestles or toast racks as they are otherwise known (Orange structures in the pictures). These are temporary support frames which hold the truss upright. Once all checks are carried out the truss can be lifted up and in place using 2 cranes in a tandem lift.
Structural Steelwork and Cladding – Tunnocks Extension, Uddingston J&D Pierce are please to announce that we have secured the contract for the structural steelwork and cladding package for the extension of the Tunnocks factory in Uddingston, Glasgow. The 3 storey, 350t steel building will create an additional 1,900 sq m additional space over 2 floors and will accommodate new production equipment. It is hoped that the new building will help to create a further 30 new roles to add to their 500 strong workforce.
Structural Steelwork – AECC – Wide Load Transportation A huge well done to our haulage division who had the tough job of transporting 15 no 4.3m wide loads made up of Trusses from our Yard in Glengarnock to Aberdeen. With the help of the Abnormal Loads Department at Police Scotland and our local constabulary in Irvine we successfully moved 5 loads over the 1st week and the remaining 10 loads over 2 days, departing at 3am to beat the early morning rush. We would like to thank Police Scotland who did a great job of keeping the road clear to allow the safe movement of the steel without any hold up until Glasgow where our own Escort vehicle took over the reigns.
Structural Steelwork - Logistics North, Plot F - Bolton - Onsite Steel Erection Progressing The erection of the Structural Steelwork for the design and build project, Logistics North, Plot F in Bolton has begun and is progressing well. The steelwork on the first building is complete with the second nearing completion leaving 1 further portal frame building to erect.
Structural Steelwork - Lidl RDC Bristol - Truss Fabrication Our Plate Girder Division - Strubeam are currently in the process of fabricating the large span trusses that make up the roof of the New Lidl RDC in Bristol. There are over 320 trusses to be fabricated spanning over 25m in length.
Structural Steelwork - AECC Exhibition Centre 31t Roof Truss Lift Complete. J&D Pierce Contracts have began the complex job of erecting the AECC Exhibition Centre main roof trusses. This first lift was a tandem lift carried out by 2 of our own GMK 4100L cranes putting into position the first and smallest truss weighing 31tonnes. There are a further 13 no trusses spanning over 88 meters in length and weighing between 67 and 70 tonnes each still to be erected.
Team Pierce take on Tough Mudder A huge congratulations and well done to Team Pierce who took on the challenge of Tough Mudder 2017 held at Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries & Galloway on the 17th June 2017. Tough Mudder is a 10-12 mile mud and obstacle course that pushes you to the limit and emphasizes teamwork and camaraderie, not only that but it also helps raise money for the Help for Heroes Charity. Ayr County Truck Show A massive well done to all of our Lorry and Escort Vehicle drivers for all there hard work washing, cleaning and polishing all their vehicles ready for the Ayr County Truck Show in May. All of the fleet looked fantastic and well maintained. However despite all of their hard work we did not win any awards this time but there's always next year!
Structural Steelwork – Works begin on site at Skye Fish Food Plant. J&D Pierce Contracts have begun the installation of the structural steelwork on the new fish food plant on the island of Skye. The 1200t steel structure is programmed to take 20 weeks. Works onsite are progressing well and looking likely to finish well on target.
