Ann Ashman It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Ann Ashman who lost her battle with cancer on the 21st January. Many of you will be familiar with Ann who worked in the Large Animal Reception in Frome from 1995 until she retired in 2014. Ann determinedly attempted to organise the farm and equine vets with considerable success, despite their resistance to being organised. Ann was always a cheery face and loved spending time with her husband Ivor in their cottage in France whenever holiday would allow. Ann was prone to a few mishaps from time to time! On one especially wet day Ivor was parked outside the surgery ready to pick her up and rang in to say he was ready. Ann hurried out in the torrential rain and jumped into the car and remarked how wet it was and that he needed to hurry up and get home. At that point she looked across to find a complete stranger sitting next to her with a perplexed look on his face. Oooh – wrong car, she exclaimed and jumped back out! Our thoughts are with Ivor and all of Ann’s family and friends at this time.

How adorable are these Japanese Shibu lnu puppies, So and Wook? We can not express how important it is to have your pets microchipped and it is a legal requirement for dogs. So and Wook were very brave when they had theirs implanted by our nurse Gemma 🐾

Poppy update . . We’ve had an amazing response from our Facebook friends regarding Poppy, our lovely patient who was hit by the train last week. Since she was discharged from the practice she has been coming in daily for post op checks and laser therapy on her wound. She is making good progress but, unsurprisingly, has a degree of discomfort still. Fortunately, she hasn’t lost her appetite and we are looking forward to seeing her again tomorrow for more laser therapy and removal of her surgical drains. This photo was taken today with her owner ❤️

Getting to choose your own birthday present can be very exciting! Bruce the Bucovina Shepherd Dog had an appointment at our Melksham surgery today to treat his sore paw. As it is also this very handsome chaps birthday, his owners left it to Bruce to find himself a new toy, but the selection was so good that he went away with 2! Happy birthday Bruce and get well soon 🎂x

We cannot believe that we have just waved goodbye to our beautiful patient Poppy. She is on her way home- something that her owners never believed would happen. Things looked VERY dark for Poppy on Wednesday morning when she arrived at our Frome surgery, collapsed, after being hit and driven over by not one, but 4 trains in Westbury! Poppy and her owners were out on their usual early morning walk when Poppy decided to chase a deer, which unfortunately bolted across the train line. The deer was killed instantly and Poppy was also struck by the train. Poppy lay still in between the tracks, with a further 3 trains trying hard to brake but not managing to stop in time. To everyone’s amazement, Poppy was still alive but unable to move and she was brought straight to us where we managed to stabilise her. Although her face was extremely swollen, she had a large wound on her back, and was in considerable pain, we were amazed that the only broken bones were a couple of ribs. Poppy has been an absolute joy to care for and the whole team are already looking forward to seeing her for her next check-up and laser treatment ❤️

May is National Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month and we are finishing our week’s celebrations with a shout out to our fantastic team of night nurses. We are proud to say that our patients are cared for 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year and are never left on their own. The night staff work on a rotating shift of 7 nights on and 7 nights off to really give them some good quality down time before its all systems go again. • Laura’s shift last night started at 6.45pm with a handover from the day nurses. • Depending on how busy her night is, she always manages to find time to give all the patients extra cuddles and medication before ‘lights out’ as it is really important that poorly patients get plenty of proper sleep. • Its 3am and time for a circuit or 2 around the paddock under torch light. • At 7am the patients are woken up for walks, breakfast and bedding changes all ready for the day staff to come in and take back over at 7.30am. Fortunately, there were no accidents or...

May is National Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month and to celebrate we will be sharing stories and news about our fantastic team of day and night nurses with you all week! Today's photo was taken by Artoo's owner during his admission appointment with our Frome nurse Gemma. Gemma joined Garston Veterinary Group straight from school and 18 years later she is still a kind, loyal and popular member of our nursing team. We asked Gemma what she loves most about her job and she replied . . 'No 2 days are ever the same, I feel privileged to be able to care for so many sick and injured animals' #garstonvets #kittensofinstagram #veterinarynurse #rvn

Look how proud Basil and Barley are with their rosettes! This handsome duo came in to see Anna for their nurse Wellness Plan checkup this morning. As both were the perfect body size and weight for their breed, they were each given a rosette. Well done boys 👍 #garstonvets #veterinarypractice #smallanimal #bodyconditionscore #dogsofinstgram

This poor chap helped himself to a 200g Easter Egg today. As most people are aware, chocolate is poisonous for dogs, and this egg was certainly enough to make Marley really ill. In fact it could have been fatal. Luckily his owners acted quickly and, as they only live a few minutes from the surgery where the on call vet and nurse were busy working, we were able to make Marley sick and prevent the chocolate from causing a problem #garstonvets #smallanimal #chocolatepoisioning #dogsofinstagram
