David Bomberg painted this view of war-scarred London whilst working as a firewatcher during WW2. He climbed to the top of a church in Cheapside to view St Paul's Cathedral - a cherished symbol of national resilience throughout the war and an apt metaphor for Bomberg's own artistic resilience during the difficult wartime years. Bomberg served in the trenches during WWI and in both wars attempted to secure artistic commissions, only to have his efforts rejected.
