It was my pleasure on Monday evening to present Cpl Bowen with her Senior Classification badge. She will now move on to study subjects to achieve Master Cadet, the highest level of classification a cadet can reach.

On Monday we had 4 cadets at Leuchars Station for Air Experience Flying. This experience introduces them to practical flight and teaches them the effects of flying controls, turning, using power and trimming, aerobatics and navigation. It can also be the stepping stone to a flying scholarship and a private pilots licence. In conjunction with ground school training completed elsewhere, cadets can be awarded different levels of badge. On this occasion we had Cdt Grogan achieve his Blue Wings and Cpl Bowen achieve her Bronze Wings. Congratulations to you both. If this is something that you might enjoy and would like to join us, pop along one Monday or Tuesday evening between 19:00-21:30 or contact us at oc.2449@aircadets.org

Last week saw 3 cadets and 1 member of staff attend a week long summer camp at RAF Spadeadam. RAF Spadeadam, located in Cumbria, is the only Electronic Warfare Tactics facility in Europe where aircrews can practise manoeuvres and tactics against a variety of threats and targets that they face in contemporary warfare. It was also used for the development of the Blue Streak missile program in the 1950’s/1960’s. The facility attracts aircraft from the RAF, Royal Navy, British Army and NATO Forces. The survival of aircrews over Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere, and the soldiers on the ground who depend on air support, are affected by the training provided by RAF Spadeadam. RAF Spadeadam is the largest RAF Station (by land area) covering 9600 acres, and run by a small team of RAF personnel, civil servants and contractors (currently Landmarc) working in partnership. Whilst there, cadets visited the Fire and German Air Force Equipment sections, had a tour of the Operations Centre and Threat Emulator Site along with a visit to the Blue Streak test site. There was also a visit to RAF Boulmer which is a critical component of the RAF Battlespace Management Force and home to the Air Surveillance and Control System (ASACS). The Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) at RAF Boulmer uses ground-based military and civilian radars to monitor, detect and identify all aircraft in and around UK airspace - 24/7, 365 days a year. This is called the Recognised Air Picture (RAP). The Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons at RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby can be scrambled to intercept unidentified aircraft. After the visit to Boulmer, cadets visited the nearby Remote Radar Head at Brizlee Wood that provides some of the airspace coverage at Boulmer. Cadets were also taught some Heartstart and took part in various competitions throughout the week, off base visits took place at the Roman Army Museum, Solway Aviation Museum, Housesteads Roman Fort, Hadrian’s Wall and a day in Carlisle. Each year, cadets are given the opportunity to attend a week long camp usually at an RAF station. If this is something that you might enjoy and would like to join us, pop along one Monday or Tuesday evening between 19:00-21:30 or contact us at oc.2449@aircadets.org

Last week, we had 3 cadets at Tayside Aviation to take part in the flying aces scheme. This is designed to provide air experience flying and future career pathway opportunities for air cadets of all backgrounds, recognising that every young person, regardless of class, family background or circumstances, should be afforded this opportunity. Air experience is the seed corn activity for those who may have an interest and aptitude to progress into a career in aviation including pilot, air traffic control, aircraft engineering, flight operations. Today we have 3 cadets and our Squadron Commander heading to RAF Spadeadam for a week long camp. If you would like to take part in these activities and more feel free to come along to the cadet hall in Dundee Street on a Monday or Tuesday evening and ask about joining us, or you can email oc.2449@aircadets.org for more information.

Last night we had the pleasure of presenting some classification badges to our newly qualified First Class cadets. Cdt's Grogan, Minting and Selvey have completed the First Class syllabus and now move onto studying for Leading Cadet. It was also time to finally present Flight Sergeant Doig with his Cadet Warrant Officer rank slides after his recent promotion. CWO is the highest rank that a cadet can reach in the Corps. Congratulations to all of the cadets!

Carnoustie women moving quickly into successful military careers

Proof that cadet forces make a difference. Of course, you don't have to join the military if you join the ATC, the skills you learn with us are just as useful in civilian life. We parade again in January if you would like to come along and see what it's all about. Monday and Tuesday nights 19:00 - 21:30.

Last Thursday saw us at the Woodlands Primary school Christmas Fayre where we raised just over £100 for our funds. We were also at Burnside Primary the week before. This brings our total raised for both Fayres to just over £180. Thanks to all of the cadets who helped out and to the Civilian Committee for organising both events.
