The new Mitchinson’s building at The King's School, which is the culmination of years of planning and hard work by the school team and contractors, has a fascinating background including an important part in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang story. The site itself is of archaeological importance as it contains the remains of a medieval hospice, itself a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The existing building, whose listed frontage and timber elements have been retained, was the original auto-works used by Count Louis Zborowski of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang fame and bears a blue plaque in recognition of this. The Count, who lived at nearby Higham Park in Bridge, built a whole series of aero-engined racing cars on the premises during the early 1920s and it was these cars, named Chitty 1, 2, 3 and 4 that gave Ian Fleming the inspiration for his famous book, leading to the even better known film and to the stage musical. The achievement of the architects, builders and school team is to have created a wonderfully modern, purpose-built new House whilst preserving links with the building’s fascinating and very memorable past.

Abbot Fyndon's Great Gate forms part of the remains of the first Benedictine Abbey in England, established around AD598 following the arrival of Augustine of Canterbury, a Benedictine monk who became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. The crenellated great gatehouse completed the building of the inner court in 1309. Now the entrance to the St Augustine's site of The King's School, Canterbury. #canterbury #Kent #thisiskent #school #independentschool #architecture #kentlife
