MACC Business Park
Description
1,000 acres of land, a 10,000 foot runway, 200 buildings with miltary heritage. Owned by the community, for the community. Machrihanish Airbase is a former RAF and NATO site situated on the Kintyre peninsula, 4 miles west of Campbeltown. The airbase was strategically important during the Cold War but is now owned and controlled by the people of Kintyre.
Machrihanish Airbase Community Company (MACC) was set up in May 2008 after the Ministry of Defence formally made the decision to close the 1,025 acre site. A group of voluntary directors, which included the former site manager, all shared a passion and determination to see the airbase assets used for the benefit of the local area. After a long buyout process, the site was eventually purchased by MACC for £1 on May 11, 2012.
The buildings and assets are now available for lease from MACC Development Ltd, the trading arm of the charity, and there are around 40 small to medium sized business tenants on site. This ranges from small construction companies, to a commercial shooting range, to one of the UK's only wind tower manufacturers.
MACC also works with the closely with the community by allowing the use of the site to host events including the Mach 1 Stages (a leg of the Scottish Tarmack Rally Championship), the MACC Challenge (a 4 mile military themed obstacle course) and model aeroplane flying weekends. Local groups such as the young firefighters, Campbeltown Running Club and the young farmers also use the facilities for training and social events.
