facebook.comAfter the wind and dismal summer of 2016 I didn't think 2017 would be worse but here on the West coast we seem to have had constant rain and cloud and the odd dry day during the week. So much for a hot summer other than a few days in June. Pendeen has had more cancellations this year than any other year due to the forecasts, and sometimes it's extremely difficult to know what to do for the best. To open or to cancel? Pendeen seems to attract a lot of sellers from up country who come to this area on holiday and look forward to selling here for a few weeks whilst staying in the area. Now they seem to come on a regular basis. Then we have those that travel from Manchester and other cities to be with us for the weekend and travel back again just to sell their wares here. REMARKABLE. Surprisingly a RECORD year has been achieved in 2017 with the amount Pendeen has raised for charity and some organisations this year £11,596.67 pushing the grand amount raised over the years at Pendeen to an astounding figure of £122,251.48 Amounts raised and given are as follows: Stratton Hospital League of Friends £7246.67 St. Andrew's Church Stratton £2000.00 Stratton Snooker Club £1000.00 Cornwall Air Ambulance £250.00 Devon Air Ambulance £250.00 Motor Neurone Disease £250.00 Bude Metric Brass £250.00 Bude Brigade £250.00 Stratton Methodist Church £100.00 Not only that but giving a free pitch to all the charities that come and sell to raise money for their just causes some raising over a thousand pounds on a yearly basis. Its been a pleasure to have been able to do that and this year for the first time I've tried to keep a record of those charities attending so here goes if I've missed anyone I am sorry. Launceston Cats Protection, Dartmoor View Dog Rescue, Literacy, Hilltop Animal Rescue, Langore Village Hall, Halford's Trust, Children's Hospice, Wrojogja Orangutan Rescue, Holsworthy Luncheon Club, Brain Tumor Research, Rose, Animal Rescue, Doing it 4 the Dogs, Romania. Oakleigh House Sanctuary, Menheniot. St. Stephens Church, Launceston. Cornwall Air Ambulance, Kenya, The Last Chance Hotel, Smile Train, Greenfell, Thailand Dog Resue, SOL. Seedlings School Charity, Gambia. Alzheimer's, Stratton Methodist Church and St Andrew's Church Stratton. Probably missed a few but this shows the wide variety of charities that has had benefit by being able to sell here, Pitch free of charge. The saddest part of organizing the boot sales for so many years is loosing the folk we have grown accustomed to seeing on a regular basis and the friendship that was formed from the early beginnings at Rockbank on a Saturday morning to the long standing friendships that have been made at Pendeen since. It's so, so sad and we are all getting older, Although it's impressive when the youngsters start buying and selling and return on a regular basis. With the older generation it's their social highlight of the week to come and see everyone. The praise and gratitude from these gives a great feel of satisfaction of what has been achieved at Pendeen. Donations are on a high on entry at 1.20pm not a record because of all the cancellations but a handsome sum raised for Stratton Hospital League of Friends. Due to John Wickett and his wife Carole. Lucille Opie and Christine Simmons, and a band of Friends who come along occasionally to hold the donation buckets, Their commitment to the League is very rewarding to see. The other rewarding factor about this is most Car Boot Sales charge a buyers entrance fee of £1 or more that goes to paying expenses and visitors are used to this. I see by asking for a donation this as a way of raising money for our Hospital at Stratton from outside the area and not by making cakes asking for raffle prizes, Selling raffle tickets organizing coffee do's etc. This event when the weather is kind can be very rewarding for the many who are more than Happy to give a donation for the pleasure of such a great social gathering without extortionate entrance fees. 2018 Season starts Easter Sunday as it happens April 1st and then Bank Holiday Monday 2nd Huge THANK YOU to Family, THE VOLUNTEERS, The donation collectors, All the Sellers, Buyers and Visitors that have supported Pendeen 2017. God willing look forward to Pendeen 2018 THANK YOU ONE AND ALL Chris xx
Great end to the season and a relief it was for keeping the site open to be able to operate for the faithful that are so appreciative. With over 100 sellers and staying dry for an outdoor event this time of year in the circumstances we have had to put up with this Autumn. Very pleasing out come. Next sale April 1st 2018
Yes we will be car booting today bit breezy see previous message.
Extra hour in bed Sunday morning October 29th. Please don't arrive to early as a seller for the last boot sale of the season which looks ok for the afternoon may be a bit chilly.10am onwards. Signs will say 1.30pm but planning on opening at 1pm for buyers from the main entrance only. Because of the hour change. The grass may be damp and longer so come prepared and PLEASE keep all vehicles away from the hedges where the ground is soft. Porto loos will be off hire from Monday and going on their holidays till end of March lol. Last week they were eager to get going.
Porto Loos are on the move in this wind lol. Single loo by disabled is rocking so that its sunk at the back and up in the front. Will rectify for next weekend in case we are on.🤣
Due to the wind forecast for tomorrow after the after effects of Brian today. Cancellation for Sunday 22nd October has been made. Looking ahead to next Sunday 29th October slight possibility we might be able to operate for the last sale of the season when the clocks alter. Been a terrible season this year but Pendeen has raised a record amount for the charities and organisations that I support. I also understand the free pitches that the charities have, that sell at Pendeen have done exceedingly well as well. Report at a later date. Pendeen will run next year from April 1st 2018 Pendeen may not have had a good season weather wise this year but over the years on this site a tremendous amount has been raised and given away due to my commitment and the help from my family and the volunteers. Obviously Pendeen depends on the weather and as other events this year have found its disheartening when the elements are against you and you wonder is it worth continuing. But hey ho see what next week brings and bring on next year.
Great Car Boot Sale this afternoon and the sun shone. Thoroughly enjoyed myself although didn't get around to busy yapping. Only down side is its so dark when trying to set up and at the end closing the site down. Sundays 22nd and 29th October left now WP. Notice a lot more Christmas decorations for sale. Love browsing at them.
Pumpkins on sale Duvets it's all here at Pendeen and the sun is shining.
With Sellers coming tomorrow from Manchester, Penzance and towns and villages to numerous to mention, Visitors arriving on holiday to this area coming as Buyers. Lets hope the weather for Sunday anyway is good. So Pendeen can be a successful outdoor event and keep this site at STRATTON just as popular as any big towns and cities. Word of warning again this week keep away from the soft areas near the hedges heed the advice from my family and VOLUNTEERS and hopefully everything might run smoothly just as it did last Sunday. The grass is nice and short in the selling area but in the car parks longer ready for the sheep as soon as this season of car boots is over on the 29th October.
Seems to be a lot of interest for this Sunday October 15th with the weather actually not looking to bad for a change. Big improvement from what I was looking at last Sunday which seems to be heading northwards thankfully. The desire to carry on to the end of the month has not been great and the energy put into this event for the last few months has not been very rewarding. Are we going to end the season on a high? Goodness knows. Last Sundays vehicles made several pot holes along the main entrance track in the field. But I've filled these in today hopefully that will improve the situation, Ready for Sunday October 15th, 22nd and 29th to finish this year.😃
Great outcome of previous message. Love to all concerned.xx
After a hassle free Car Boot Sale yesterday 8th October and a really enjoyable afternoon weather wise. It was unfortunate to hear later in the evening from a gentleman from Launceston who attends Pendeen regularly as a buyer. That he had purchased a large television for £45 with an asking price of £70 in good working order from a family that has moved to Bude, Only to find that it doesn't work when trying it out. If this television has been in storage and not actually tested before arriving at sale. This sounds like problem and could be a genuine mistake on behalf of the seller. Now as organizer and the reputation of Pendeen at stake would be nice if the seller came forward and reimbursed the buyer. Yes I know its your choice to buy electrical items at a Car Boot Sale not always knowing and its always rather risky not knowing or believing the seller. If the seller is a regular the chance is money back the week after etc. But with the weather as it is we don't even know whether we are operating with the last three sales of the season approaching. Would be nice if this could be sorted though, live in hope. Chris
